More than 1,600 high school students from 8 Northern Virginia school divisions participated in the 2026 Instruction to Industry (i2i) Future Ready Conference held on March 11 & 12.

Team members from Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center were on hand, in partnership with colleagues from Inova Health and Virginia Ed Strategies, to offer a valuable forum highlighting the wide range of career paths available in healthcare.

Our team had meaningful conversations, shared personal stories and offered guidance to these students and encouraged them to explore a future career in healthcare.

We value the dedication and skill of all our nurses - and on March 19, we proudly recognize those who have achieved specialty board certification in honor of Certified Nurses Day. This day celebrates the expertise, commitment, and advanced knowledge of nurses who earn and maintain national certification in their specialties.

Certified nurses meet rigorous standards by passing comprehensive exams and committing to lifelong learning—demonstrating excellence in care for patients, families, and healthcare teams. Research shows that specialty certification is linked to improved patient outcomes and strengthens careers, teams, and community health.

Certified Nurses Day is observed each year on March 19, the birthday of Margretta “Gretta” Madden Styles, a pioneering leader in nurse credentialing and a driving force behind national certification standards and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Thank you to all our nurses as we celebrate Certified Nurses Day, your commitment helps us improve health every day!

Every spring, our Women's Health Center works to support healthy moms & babies and raise awareness by Marching for Babies at the annual March of Dimes walk in DC. 💜

As a "fun"-raiser this year, team members nominated their colleagues to wear the March of Dimes purple tutu for part of the day. The "March in a Tutu" fundraiser brought laughter, smiles, and raised money for this year's campaign.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who nominated a peer, participated, donated, cheered our nominees on, and helped make this event both successful and FUN. This support from across our team helps us continue raising awareness and funds to support healthy moms and babies everywhere.

Right now, women make up nearly 80% of the healthcare workforce in the U.S., which includes a significant number of roles such as doctors, nurses, medical assistants, administrators, and many more professionals. This dominance highlights the critical contributions of women in the healthcare sector, particularly in driving job growth and ensuring patient care.

As we continue to celebrate Women’s History Month, we proudly honor the many women whose talent, dedication, and compassion strengthen Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center and the broader healthcare community. We are grateful for the countless ways they inspire excellence, drive innovation, and support our mission to improve health every day.

🐾 Comfort on Four Paws: Meet the Therapy Dogs Bringing Healing to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. 🐾

Healing doesn’t just come from medicine – sometimes, it walks in on four paws and a wagging tail. ❤️ Over the past year, our therapy dog program has grown from one to five certified therapy dogs, expanding the comfort, joy, and emotional support offered to our patients, families, and team members.

Meet three of the furry friends making a difference:

✨ Hope: A gentle, intuitive Aussiedoodle who volunteers in high intensity areas like the Emergency Department and ICU. Her handler, Paula, gives back to the very place that cared for her husband during the pandemic. “Volunteering here feels like paying it forward,” she says.

✨ Hayden: This small but mighty mini Bernadoodle brings big comfort wherever he goes. A true “pandemic pup,” Hayden loves the hospital environment. As his handler Tanyia says, “He brings something that can’t be prescribed: unconditional love.”

✨ Ellie: Affectionately nicknamed “Ellie Belly,” this Rhodesian Ridgeback offers weekly moments of calm. Her handler, Sue, a semi-retired pediatric nurse, knows how much a smile can matter.

These dogs - and their wonderful handlers/moms - are more than volunteers, they’re part of our caregiving team. Their presence not only supports patients and families but also boosts the morale and well-being of our dedicated team members.

We’re always looking for compassionate volunteers — both two legged and four legged! Read the article linked below in the first comment to learn more about these wonderful therapy dogs and to find a link for information on the SNVMC Volunteer Program.

💛 Healing. Comfort. Connection. Sometimes, it all begins with a friendly paw.
