Your newborn doesn't know they've been born.

They don't understand that they've left the womb. They don't know what outside is. They don't know what cold is or light is or hunger is or gravity is. Every single sensation hitting their body right now is the first time it has ever existed.

For 9 months they lived in a world with no variation. Same temperature. Same pressure. Same sound. Same darkness. Every need met automatically. No waiting. No asking. No discomfort.

Now everything is different and they have no framework to understand why.

The cold air on their skin — they don't know what cold is. They just know something changed and it's not comfortable.

The bright lights — they don't know what light is. They just know something is hitting their eyes that has never hit their eyes before.

The hunger — they don't know what hunger is. In the womb nutrition arrived automatically. Now there's a sensation they've never felt and no understanding that it means they need to eat.

The open space — they don't know what space is. They were held on all sides for 9 months. Now nothing is touching them and the nervous system reads it as exposure. Danger. Uncontained.

This is why they cry. Not because something is wrong. Because EVERYTHING is new and they have no way to process any of it.

This is why they calm on your chest. Your heartbeat is the only sound that hasn't changed. Your warmth is the only temperature that feels familiar. Your compression is the only pressure that matches what they knew.

You are not soothing them. You are returning them to the only version of reality they understand.

God designed the transition from womb to world to be gradual. Your body is the bridge. Every time you hold them you're saying: the old world is still here. You're safe. Nothing has been lost.

Share this with every parent of a newborn. Everything about the first weeks makes sense when you understand that your baby doesn't know they left.

Birth is not a medical event, it is a life experience. If birthing women were told it is natural, normal and easy what would birth look like and feel like for women? When you are told something is painful the mind takes over the body and the result is an extension of pain. If you are told the opposite and the physiology of birth actually matches that truth then the whole experience changes.
