Some measles facts and resources:

There is an outbreak currently in Texas of measles. One child has now died from complications. This is a highly contagious disease, which is why widespread vaccination has been so important to keep it at bay. The CDC, WHO and Measles & Rubella Partnership all have great resources you can use to assess spread, symptoms and complications.

If you have not received your childhood MMR vaccines or your children have not, now is a great time to get ahead of the outbreak and talk to your providers about getting vaccinated. The MMR vaccine is not safe to receive while pregnant, but is safe to receive postpartum and even if you are breastfeeding.

If you have received the MMR as a child, you likely are still protected. There is not currently a recommendation to check individuals or pregnant patients for immunity for measles. This may change if the outbreak worsens, but as of this time, ACOG and SMFM have not recommended screening for immunity.

Mississippi: My departure is now official. Today I finished my last weekend of call and will be driving to Minnesota tomorrow. I will miss my coworkers and patients. I appreciate everyone’s gifts, kind words and cards. I truly wish the best for you and your family in 2025. Happy holidays!
