With all the changes to vaccine schedules and making them “optional”, it gives insurance and the federal government an out to not have to pay for them, how convenient. Then, the federal government could move to make other preventive services “optional” and non-covered. (Mammogram? Colonoscopy?) Naturopathic physicians support public access to vaccines and other life-saving services. Yesterday we spent time talking with lawmakers who are responsible for signing bills for healthcare providers that protect and advance our scope. We cleared up some misconceptions that NDs are “anti-vaccines”, and rather support choice and access for patients. We also spent time explaining how pay parity would increase our ability to take all the insurances including Medicaid, and that it’s important that NDs have access to jobs in rural community health clinics. Lobbying and advocacy, clears misconceptions and strengthens the profession.

Lobby day, supporting bill HB1888 as well as inclusion of NDs on primary care, prevention and pay parity bills. In person lobbying matters! Patients deserve access to care that is inclusive, equitable and affordable by providers who take time, are properly trained and care about the work that they provide.

Today's NEW Dietary Guidelines deliver a clear, common-sense message to the American people: EAT REAL FOOD.

The 2025–2030 Guidelines reestablish food — not pharmaceuticals — as the foundation of health and reclaim the food pyramid as a tool for nourishment and education.

Trying to get more protein per meal? Eggs are only 6 grams, same with peanut butter! It’s even hard with an egg white scramble to hit the 30 plus protein grams at breakfast. Average protein bars are 15-20 at best.
Try these tweaks:
💧Protein powder smoothie with 2 scoops, add yogurt and chia seeds and nuts for additional grams. (Easy 40-60 grams)
🍳 Add protein powder into a nonfat Greek yogurt bowl, top with fruit and chia seeds. Easily 40-50 grams. Nonfat Greek plain yogurt has about 16-20 grams per cup vs other yogurts are lower, check the label.
🍎 If you do like eggs, consider egg whites over whole eggs and then also add smoked salmon or chicken sausage to double your grams.
🥑 Skip the toast, oats, cereals, and high carb protein bars. You can get higher protein waffle mix like makes or cut your oats with chia seeds to pack more protein over carbs. Any grain even with fiber is going to be higher in carbs.

Believe it or not, it’s not that hard to calculate your own macronutrients (carbs, protein and fat). But it’s something that rarely any of my patients are doing. Calories in and out is definitely not the whole picture. Especially protein, it’s the essential building block for hormones, muscles, neurotransmitters for mood, skin, hair growth, nails, energy , fat loss and more! Did you know creatine is actually just 3 amino acids combined? (Ie protein!)
💫 Take your resting metabolic rate : either calculate with BMR calculator (based on height, weight, gender, age, activity level). To be more accurate take the health app and get your wearables “active energy plus resting energy “ in calories, this number is what you burn daily including your exercise.
💫 For weight maintaining, eat this number , it includes your weekly activity. If you want to lose weight, create a deficit in calories up to 500 (subtract 500). If you want to gain, eat more than this number daily.
💫 Then take your total calories and multiple by 40%, to get total protein in calories. Divide by 4 (1 gram is 4 kcals protein), to get protein in grams.
💫 low carb diets are normally around 25% or less (net carbs is total minus fiber). Then divide by 4 also (1 gram carb is 4 kcals).
💫 To get your fats, take the remaining percentage and divide by 9. (9kcals for 1 gram fat)
💫 a handful of chicken, turkey, fish or tofu is about 25-30 grams of protein. Most people need about 120 grams or MORE. If you are having trouble with fat loss, fatigue, weight gain, hormones, I can almost guarantee you are falling short of protein or over-eating your carb ratio.
💫 for tracking, I like or

Let me know how it goes! Wearing a wearable watch or fitness device is the most accurate way to gain a sense of your calories burned through your day.

Dr. Apfelbaum is a primary care physician with special interest in women’s health, nutrition, weight loss, pain management, autoimmune disease, and allergies. Dr. Apfelbaum always knew she wanted to go into the healthcare field, but did not think prescription medications should be the only choice for treatment of chronic illness. Naturopathic medicine allows her to use many different treatment options for healing, such as diet, nutrition, supplements, hands-on manual therapy, and lifestyle modifications with good success. She believes every person has a unique healing journey and should be treated individually. To schedule an appointment call 425-408-0040.
