πŸ’™ Friday Shoutout: To the SLPs Who Never Give Up πŸ’™
As we head into the weekend, we want to recognize something we see in this community every single day:
Your persistence!

You're the clinician who tries three different approaches when the first two don't work. You're the one who stays late to finish notes because your patient needed that extra 10 minutes. You're the one who researches new protocols on your own time because you KNOW there's a better way to help.

You celebrate when a patient begins to show improvement after all the hard work the two of you have put in. You document religiously even when it's tedious because you know it matters. You advocate fiercely for your patients when insurance denies coverage.
This work isn't easy. But you show up anyway.

That persistence? That refusal to give up on your patients? That's what makes you exceptional.

So this Friday, we're celebrating YOU. Take a moment to acknowledge how far you've brought your patients this week. You're making a real difference, even when it doesn't feel like it.

What's one win from your week - big or small? Share it below! Let's celebrate together before the weekend! πŸ‘‡πŸ’™

🦷 IADR General Session & Exhibition Week: Celebrating Dental Research & Interdisciplinary Care 🦷

This week, the International Association of Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research (IADR) is gathering in San Diego (March 25-28), and while we're not attending this year, we want to take a moment to celebrate the incredible work happening at the intersection of dental and swallowing research!

Why the connection matters:
Oral structure impacts swallowing function.
Dental professionals and SLPs often work with overlapping patient populations - post-surgical oral cancer patients, individuals with structural abnormalities, patients with tongue mobility issues.

Objective measurement creates a common language.
When dentists, oral surgeons, and SLPs can reference the same lingual pressure data, interdisciplinary care becomes more coordinated and effective.

Research advances everyone's practice!
Studies presented at conferences like IADR often have direct implications for dysphagia assessment and treatment. To all the researchers presenting at IADR: Thank you for advancing the science of oral motor function! Your work impacts patients far beyond the dental chair.

Do you collaborate with dental professionals in your dysphagia work? We'd love to hear about those partnerships! πŸ‘‡

πŸ“‹ The Critical Importance of Baseline Measurements πŸ“‹
Let's talk about a simple practice that can dramatically improve your treatment outcomes and documentation: always establishing a baseline.

Here are some benefits of establishing baseline measures:
1. Baseline measures provide an objective starting point. Without knowing where a patient begins, you can't accurately measure how far they've come! "Improved strength" is subjective. "Increased from 25 kPa to 42 kPa" is objective proof.

2. Baseline measures help you set realistic goals. When you know the baseline, you can establish appropriate short-term and long-term targets based on evidence rather than guesswork.

3. Baseline measures make documentation easier. Insurance companies want to see measurable progress. Baseline-to-current comparisons can make that more concrete and compelling.

4. Baseline measures motivate patients! Showing someone they've improved 15 kPa in three weeks is incredibly encouraging, especially when progress feels slow to them subjectively.

Pro tips for baseline success:
Take measurements at your very first session, even if the patient is at their weakest. Document baseline values in your initial evaluation notes. Reference the baseline in every progress note. Use baseline data to justify continued treatment or progression to discharge.

One measurement at session one can impact the entire course of care. Make it count! Do you always take baseline measurements? What's your process? Share below! πŸ‘‡

πŸ” Using the IOPI for Assessment vs. Treatment? Understanding Both Applications πŸ”
One question we hear often: "Should I use IOPI primarily for assessment or for treatment?"

The answer? Both! But understanding how it serves each purpose helps you maximize its clinical value.

The IOPI in Assessment:
Establishes objective baseline data for lingual and lip strength, identifies specific areas of weakness to target in therapy, provides concrete data, can help determine readiness for diet modifications or discharge.

The IOPI in Treatment:
Provides real-time biofeedback during strengthening exercises, allows you to set specific pressure targets for progressive resistance training, tracks improvement session-to-session to guide treatment intensity, motivates patients through visible progress data.

The sweet spot? Using it for both! Baseline assessment data becomes more valuable when you can show measurable treatment progress over time. Your treatment sessions are more targeted when you have clear assessment data showing exactly where weakness exists.

Think of it this way: assessment tells you WHERE to focus. Treatment shows you HOW MUCH you've improved. IOPI does both. How do YOU primarily use the IOPI - assessment, treatment, or both? Share your approach in the comments! πŸ‘‡

πŸ’ͺ Keeping Patients Motivated: Real Strategies That Work πŸ’ͺ
Let's talk about one of the biggest challenges in dysphagia therapy: maintaining patient motivation through the long haul.

Tongue strengthening exercises can feel repetitive. Progress can seem slow. Patients get discouraged. We've all been there. Here's where objective data becomes your secret weapon for motivation!

Make progress visible: Print out or display their measurements over time. A graph showing 32 kPa climbing to 41 kPa over three weeks is incredibly powerful visual proof.

Set micro-goals: Instead of "get stronger," try "let's hit 35 kPa by next week." Specific, measurable targets give patients something concrete to work toward.

Celebrate ALL improvements: Even a 2-3 kPa increase is real progress! Acknowledge it. Name it. Make it matter.

Connect data to function: "Your tongue pressure is now strong enough to safely handle thicker liquids. Want to try one today?" Links the numbers to real-world wins.

Use comparison strategically: "Three weeks ago you could only do 5 repetitions at this pressure. Today you did 12!" Endurance gains are just as important as max strength.

The data doesn't lie - and patients respond to that honesty. When they can SEE their progress, they believe in the process. What's YOUR go-to strategy for keeping patients engaged? Share your wisdom! πŸ‘‡

🀝 The Power of Interdisciplinary Collaboration 🀝
Dysphagia care doesn't happen in a silo - and neither does objective measurement!

IOPI is used across multiple disciplines to assess oral motor function, each bringing their unique perspective:

Speech-Language Pathologists may use IOPI for swallowing cases involving tongue or palate.

Researchers across disciplines may use IOPI to generate objective data for studies on tongue strength, swallowing mechanics, and treatment efficacy.

When different professionals can use the same objective measurement tool, it creates a common language for collaboration. Your data as an SLP can inform an OMT dental treatment plan. A researcher's findings can shape your clinical protocols.

That's the beauty of objective measurement - it bridges disciplines and improves patient care across the board.

Do you collaborate with other disciplines in your dysphagia work? Tell us about it! πŸ‘‡
