Our nurse practitioner Rachael, naturopathic doctor Dr. Tali, and I had a chance to get together Thursday evening and discuss some cases, of course with the help also of loving dogs Sierra and Toby- blurry fuzzballs in this pic! We also went over genetic testing and how that can impact patient care. It is a simple saliva test that you only need to do once, and can provide some deep insights into how your body works and what are the nutritional factors and supplements that benefit you most. Don’t hesitate to ask us about it at your next visit!

Just a little reminder that you can always get the best infrared light exposure by going outside in the sun. There are so many benefits of being outside, and this is one of the biggest ones. Your mitochondria literally need infrared light exposure in order to work optimally. If you have your own infrared light machine at home, that’s great. But everyone can get infrared light simply by going outside.

Check the sun index on the weather app on your phone to see what hours are safe. If the index is 2 or less, you can stay outside for over an hour without getting burned. Even at levels up to 3-5, you can usually stay out for 30 minutes. At levels higher than 5, you do need to be extremely careful.

Notably, you need an Index of 3 or higher to produce any Vitamin D. But remember, you can always get infrared light, no matter what the index.

How often do you open your news feed and encounter a message about the secret ingredient to good health? I have news for you. There is only one secret, plain and simple. Real Food.

Today the Sunday New York Times ran a glowing piece on a new protein bar called “David’s”. Apparently investors are so excited about it that they raised 75 million dollars in 9 months and they think the value of this company will reach close to a billion dollars.

Their secret? You have to read almost all the way to the end of the article for the big reveal. It is…E.P.G.

You don’t even need to read on to get a sense that an ingredient with those initials is not something you want to put in your body. But I’ll tell you anyway. E.P.G. stands for esterified propoxylated glycerol. This is a processed plant fat that “moves” through your digestive system practically unabsorbed.

Have you seen this game before? I don’t think I have to tell you that not many people would want to be around you with that thing moving through your digestive system. Once this product is released on the market, you are going to need to be careful who you stand next to on the elevator.

Eat real food! It’s the only answer.

I was honored last week to be a guest at the 25th anniversary celebration of the Community Garden at White Memorial Medical Center in East LA. It brought back so many memories of working in the dirt - in between my on call shifts as a resident there with Family Care Specialists- to create this sanctuary.

People from the community, teachers and kids from the nearby elementary school, doctors and hospital staff, and local organizations came together at the turn of the century to put their sweat and passion into this space. It was wonderful to bask in the shade of the fruit trees, see the plants growing, and reconnect with old friends.

It is a living example that optimal health is achieved through clean eating, staying active, connecting with nature, and doing what you love.
