Why Humor Is Essential for Teen Boys in Therapy

A lot of parents expect therapy to be serious.
And sometimes… it is.

But when it comes to teenage boys, one of the most important tools is actually:
👉 Humor

Because that’s how they connect.

Even when things are heavy, humor helps them:
Feel more comfortable
Build trust
Open up more naturally
It gives them a sense of control during tough conversations.

So yes—sometimes group therapy includes inappropriate 16-year-old humor.
And that’s not a distraction.

It’s part of the process.

There’s a stage of motherhood that doesn’t get talked about enough.

Your kids are older. They need you less.
And suddenly… you have a little more space—but not always a clear sense of what to do with it.

Rosie Fiore, AMFT created Mom’s Mental Tune-Up for exactly this moment.

This isn’t a parenting class.
It’s a midlife reset.

A small, supportive group (no more than 6 moms), meeting online—so you can show up from home, even in your pajamas—and start reconnecting with yourself again.

Because if you’ve been wondering, “What’s next for me?”… you’re not the only one.

The Surprising Rule That Makes Teen Boys Open Up

Most parents assume group therapy for teen boys needs more rules.
But one of the most important rules is actually this:
👉 No topic is off limits.

That might sound uncomfortable… even risky.

But here’s what we see over and over again:
When boys feel like they can’t say something, they shut down completely.
And if they can’t say the “offensive” thing… they won’t say the vulnerable thing either.

In group, we don’t avoid discomfort—we work through it.
That’s where emotional growth actually happens.

And when something does land wrong?
That becomes the moment to build empathy, accountability, and real connection.

This is how trust is built. This is how boys open up.

When your teenager is anxious, it’s natural to want to fix it.

So you say things like:
“It’s going to be okay.”
“Don’t worry about it.”

But here’s the problem…
Your teen still feels anxious—and now they may also feel misunderstood or alone.

In those moments, they’re not in a logical state.
They’re in an emotional one.
And emotional problems need emotional support first.

That means:
• Sitting with them
• Validating their experience
• Helping them feel safe

Then—once they’ve settled—you can move into problem-solving.

This one shift can make a huge difference in how your teen experiences you during anxiety.

There’s a lot of conversation right now about AI in mental health care — including whether it could replace therapists.

From what I’m seeing clinically, that’s not where things are heading.

AI may improve access to support and provide helpful tools between sessions. But therapy — especially for kids and teens — depends on trust, connection, and relationship.

That’s not something technology can replicate.
I do think AI will become part of mental health care.

But it will work best when it supports human therapists — not replaces them.

Curious how others are thinking about this.

Artificial intelligence tools that help mental health therapists take notes and keep records are quickly entering the marketplace. But some question the safety of AI in mental health care delivery.

Talking to Your Kids About Divorce: What Really Matters

One of the hardest parts of divorce isn’t the paperwork—it’s the conversation with your kids.
And here’s what matters most:
👉 Being on the same page with your co-parent.

Even if communication is difficult right now, your kids need consistency and clarity. This moment isn’t about either parent’s emotions—it’s about helping your children feel safe, secure, and supported.

Before you talk to them:
✔️ Agree on what you’ll say
✔️ Keep the message simple and age-appropriate
✔️ Focus on reassurance

Your kids will remember how they felt in this moment.

If you want help navigating this, we created a guide for parents:

When your kids leave home, it can feel like something is missing.

But what if this isn’t a loss… it’s a transition?

We recently hosted our first Mom’s Mental Tuneup group, and one thing became clear: having space to talk about this stage—with other moms who understand—can completely shift how it feels.

From uncertainty… to possibility.

Our next group starts April 14th:
• 6 weekly online sessions (Tuesday evenings)
• Plus two 30-minute 1:1 sessions
• $450 total

If this stage of life feels familiar, we’d love to have you join us.

Message us for details.

If your daughter is up late scrolling and can’t seem to stop… you’re not alone.

This is something we’re seeing more and more in our practice here in Woodland Hills.

Girls who used to be confident are now constantly comparing themselves, feeling more anxious, and withdrawing—while still telling their parents they’re “fine.”

What many parents don’t realize is that it’s not just about screen time.

It’s about what social media is replacing—real connection, self-esteem, and a sense of purpose.

If you’re worried about your daughter and not sure what to do next, we offer a free, in-depth phone consultation.

We’ll help you understand what’s really going on and what kind of support could help.

In group therapy, the formation of alliances can resemble the dynamics of high school cliques. While these connections can foster friendships among teens, it's crucial for facilitators to acknowledge and discuss these alliances. By doing so, we not only enhance empathy but also create a more inclusive environment for all participants. Addressing group dynamics is essential for promoting healthy interactions and support.
