Vitamin B12 plays a huge role in keeping your brain sharp, immune system strong, and energy levels stable. It helps your body produce red blood cells and supports DNA and nerve health. But surprisingly, many people don’t get enough of it—especially older adults, vegans, vegetarians, or anyone with certain health conditions or medications that mess with B12 absorption.
One of the earliest red flags? Feeling tired all the time, even when you’ve slept well. That’s because without enough B12, your body struggles to make red blood cells, which deliver oxygen throughout your system. Less oxygen means less energy—for both your body and your brain.
Other sneaky symptoms include muscle weakness, numbness or tingling in your hands and feet, and that annoying “brain fog” where you keep forgetting things. Some people even feel off-balance, dizzy, or start stumbling more often. If your skin looks paler than usual or your tongue feels oddly smooth or sore, that could be a clue too.
B12 also affects your mood. Low levels may trigger feelings of anxiety or depression, possibly because the vitamin helps produce mood-regulating brain chemicals. And in more serious cases, your vision can be affected due to nerve damage.
So, what to do? Well, a simple blood test can reveal if you're low—and getting your levels up can ease symptoms quickly.
