Westman Farriery GradDip ELR, Professional Farrier services since 1992. UC Davis Large Animal Head Farrier 2016-2024. Westman Farriery - Chief of Farrier Services

I am a therapeutic farrier and educator at a top veterinary school teaching hospital. I try and take an evidence based approach to making hoof care decisions. I am not tied to any one trimming or shoeing method, technique, or line of thought. My work evolves as industry knowledge base advances with better empirical evidence. I do what I believe to be best for the HORSE first and foremost and will not compromise the overall health of the horse for performance. I value continued learning and evolution of my skill and knowledge through practice and study. I attend regular continuing education events and clinics, as well as review research and literature to attain a better understanding of the biomechanics of the the equine system.

Owner Tip:

I think I can speak for many farriers when I say I’d rather have the feet a little dirty or muddy than really wet.

I appreciate the thought that you want to hose off the horse’s legs for me, but when my gear and clothes get wet and cold, my day is not nearly as fun.

So unless you can be assured the horse will be dry at the appointment time, leave the hose hung up and knock the worst of the mud off with a brush, pick, or towel. I carry a brush to finish the job.

*Happy Farrier, Happy horse*

Amazing things happening at Rowan University with faculty HoF farrier, friend, and mentor Pat Reilly!

From Pat: “These engineering students will be helping us develop a method for measuring the height of toe grabs on horseshoes entering the paddock without having to lift the horse's leg. This will ensure horseshoes are compliant with HISA requirements and improve the safety of horses and jockeys. I am very proud of this collaboration!”

The Power of Collaboration: Students from Rowan University's Department of Biomedical Engineering recently met with veterinary school faculty to discuss ways in which the two groups could work together to improve animal health. When engineering and medical minds combine, the results could include advancements in teaching/training models, biometric sensors, wearables/devices, prosthetics, equipment/tools and more. We are excited to work with these brilliant students in the near future!
