I am a therapeutic farrier and educator at a top veterinary school teaching hospital. I try and take an evidence based approach to making hoof care decisions. I am not tied to any one trimming or shoeing method, technique, or line of thought. My work evolves as industry knowledge base advances with better empirical evidence. I do what I believe to be best for the HORSE first and foremost and will not compromise the overall health of the horse for performance. I value continued learning and evolution of my skill and knowledge through practice and study. I attend regular continuing education events and clinics, as well as review research and literature to attain a better understanding of the biomechanics of the the equine system.

Hoof Care Tip!

In the “Why didn’t I think of that?” Category….

Heart bar shoes are a wonderful tool I use often for various reasons. One of the drawbacks of using heart bar shoes is cleaning the lateral sulci between the heel and the frog that the bar covers. It’s tough to get a hoof pick in and out, but I feel its important to maintain the area as well.

A WFS client shared a creative fix for cleaning out the area with a straw cleaner. Smart thinking!

Can't blame the farrier for everything...

Found in the wild…. One of my hoof pick gifts! Looks like it’s getting used. Amazing indeed.

International Hoof Care Summit week is next week!

Here is a throwback post to chew on from a series of studies on Australian feral horses published in peer reviewed journals. Hampson/ Pollit’s work changed my perspective significantly.
