I am a therapeutic farrier and educator at a top veterinary school teaching hospital. I try and take an evidence based approach to making hoof care decisions. I am not tied to any one trimming or shoeing method, technique, or line of thought. My work evolves as industry knowledge base advances with better empirical evidence. I do what I believe to be best for the HORSE first and foremost and will not compromise the overall health of the horse for performance. I value continued learning and evolution of my skill and knowledge through practice and study. I attend regular continuing education events and clinics, as well as review research and literature to attain a better understanding of the biomechanics of the the equine system.

An inexpensive welder, length of 3/8 round, and some imagination can lead to many modifications. So many more than I had posted on that day practicing with my new little welder, but hopefully got some ideas flowing for someone.

I’ve since moved to a small flux core MIG welder in my mobile setup.e

Farrier Tip: Disinfect tools and anywhere else a horse may have come into contact to help with disease control between horses or barns, especially barns that have horses that travel.

It’s always a good idea to practice good disease control hygiene, but especially now with recent outbreak news.

Owner Tip:

I think I can speak for many farriers when I say I’d rather have the feet a little dirty or muddy than really wet.

I appreciate the thought that you want to hose off the horse’s legs for me, but when my gear and clothes get wet and cold, my day is not nearly as fun.

So unless you can be assured the horse will be dry at the appointment time, leave the hose hung up and knock the worst of the mud off with a brush, pick, or towel. I carry a brush to finish the job.
