As the news settles in that Donald Trump will again lead our country, many are feeling a mixture of fear, frustration, and uncertainty. For those in communities historically marginalized, such as LGBTQIA+ individuals, women, and particularly women of color, these feelings are intense and valid. But in times of great change, there is also great opportunity—opportunity to unite, to uplift, and to harness the power of grassroots movements and civil disobedience.
A Legacy of Resilience: Grassroots Power
Our country has a history of transformative change driven by people just like us, working together to make a difference. When we think of some of the most impactful movements in U.S. history—civil rights, women’s suffrage, and marriage equality—they weren’t won overnight. They were fought for by everyday people organizing, standing up, and demanding their voices be heard.
Grassroots movements work because they empower people at the local level. The first step to countering fear is turning it into action. Consider that every small step you take—whether it’s signing a petition, attending a community meeting, or volunteering with local organizations—ripples outward. Together, these actions build momentum and create networks of support. We might feel small alone, but together we are powerful.
The Role of Civil Disobedience
One of the most powerful tools we have is civil disobedience: the intentional, nonviolent act of defying policies that infringe on our rights. Figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and Rosa Parks showed us that civil disobedience can be a moral force, compelling people to confront injustices and rally behind change. When laws or policies threaten the dignity or well-being of any group, civil disobedience shines a spotlight on these injustices.
If you’re worried about policies that affect the LGBTQIA+ community, women’s rights, or the rights of people of color, there are steps you can take. Peaceful protests, organized strikes, or collective boycotts send a powerful message to leaders, businesses, and others in positions of authority: we will not stand by while rights are stripped away. These actions create visible, undeniable pressure on the system, making it clear that we’re watching and we care deeply about the rights of our communities.
A Call for Unity
Unity is more than just a call to stand together—it’s a call to understand each other, uplift each other, and amplify the voices that most need to be heard. When we come together as a coalition of diverse individuals and communities, we’re building a formidable defense against policies or rhetoric that seek to divide or harm us.
To everyone feeling marginalized, to those who have felt overlooked or excluded, and to those facing new fears in light of this election: you are not alone. Now is the time for us to connect across communities, across differences, and across experiences. We must listen to each other’s struggles, champion each other’s causes, and remain united in our desire for a world where everyone’s dignity is respected.
Action Steps for a Positive Path Forward
Here’s how we can start working together:
Educate and Advocate: Attend community meetings, learn about local and national policies, and help educate others. Knowledge is power, and sharing it strengthens our movement.
Volunteer with Local Organizations: Find groups that are working to support marginalized communities and offer your time and skills. Building a network of mutual aid is one of the strongest ways we can help each other.
Engage in Peaceful Protest and Civil Disobedience: When our rights are under threat, civil disobedience becomes a necessary act of resistance. Find ways to participate in nonviolent actions, whether through rallies, sit-ins, or walkouts.
Vote and Encourage Civic Engagement: Voting matters at every level, from local to national elections. We must elect leaders who represent our values and advocate for everyone’s rights.
Support Each Other: Check in on friends, family, and neighbors, especially those in marginalized communities. Small acts of kindness and solidarity build resilience.
Let’s take our fear and turn it into something powerful. We have done it before, and we can do it again. When we stand together, we are a force for good, capable of shaping a more inclusive, compassionate future.
