These are some of my favorite toys that naturally encourage communication, early words, and back and forth interaction. Bubbles, animals, cars, balls, and blocks might look simple, but they are powerful tools for building language when used with intention.

Remember, it is less about the toy and more about how you play together. Follow your child’s lead, model simple words, and have fun connecting. Communication grows best through play and connection.

Here are three simple ways to encourage those first words, from a speech therapist and mom.

Acknowledge every communication attempt, even if it is not perfect. Smiles, sounds, gestures. It all counts.

Use a simple, predictable phrase like “ready, set, go” or “peek a boo” during play. Over time, pause before the last word and wait to see if your little one will fill it in.

Model one word at a time and repeat it often. Kids need lots of repetition before those first words really stick.

I’ve thought about my son’s one-year appointment a lot lately.
Our doctor was calm, kind, and never made me feel like I was doing something wrong. She cared, but didn’t scare me. She offered advice that felt simple and doable.

I left that appointment feeling capable and supported, and it really stuck with me.
