This Thanksgiving, I’d like to take a moment to highlight and acknowledge my friend and exceptional surgical assistant, Aris John (AJ) Arenas. AJ and I have worked together since my very first case in practice—a multi-ligament knee injury—over four years ago!

Since 2020, AJ has been by my side for more than 75% of my surgeries and is a pivotal reason why our team will eclipse 600 surgical cases this year.

AJ began his career as a surgical assistant in 2000, gaining experience in various surgical disciplines, including Obstetrics/Gynecology, Vascular, Trauma, Thoracic, and General Surgery. He ultimately transitioned to Orthopaedic and Plastic/Reconstructive Surgery, where his true passions lie. As an esteemed member of the National Surgical Assistant Association, AJ is widely recognized as a leader and mentor in his field.

Few surgical assistants possess his unique combination of surgical experience and technical skill. His dedication and attention to detail create a level of synchronization in the operating room that is unparalleled, often akin to the harmony of a symphony orchestra. In fact, many surgeries are performed seamlessly without speaking a word, as our body language cues guide the progression of the procedure.

I’m truly grateful for AJ’s unwavering support and commitment to providing elite surgical care for our patients. Thank you, AJ, for everything you do!

High school junior Lillian Marx has loved competitive diving since she was 9 years old. She even does “dry land conditioning” on her trampoline to train in her spare time. Unfortunately, last spring, she sustained an injury during one such training session.

Lateral Extra-articular Tenodesis (LET) offers a powerful restraint to rotational instability of the knee and is a valuable technique in revision ACL surgery with increasing indications in the primary setting. Our recent paper presents a biomechanical study of LET tissue engagement as a function of tibial kinematics.

This work represents the collaboration of our superb team and .sports. Furthering our understanding of surgical biomechanics of LET fixation.
