Managing a child’s school anxiety can be challenging. Here is a few helpful tips you can use to help your child feel more confident and supported:

Listen and validate feelings
* Let your child talk about their fears without interruption.
* Avoid dismissing their worries.
* Say things like “That sounds really hard. I am glad you told me”

Maintain routines
* A stable morning and evening routine can help reduce stress.
* Lay out clothes, pack lunch, and prepare their backpack the night before.

Model calm behavior
* Children often mirror their parents reactions.
* stay calm and confident, even if you’re worried too.

Encourage problem solving
* Problem solving shifts their focus from fear to action.
* Encouraging language to use: “Let’s figure this out together” or “it’s okay to make mistakes, that’s how we learn”.

Teach coping strategies
* Deep breathing, grounding exercises, or positive self talk.
* Create a ‘calm down kit’ with fidget toys, a journal, or comforting photos.

Prepare for transitions
* Talk about what’s coming.
* Use visual aids or timelines.
* Practice a routine.

Following these steps will ensure less stress and more confidence with the new school year!
