Stretch your spine. Maintaining a healthy back begins with simple, daily movement. Here is a quick and effective stretch you can try at home or work:
1. Stand tall with feet hip-width apart.
2. Gently fold forward from the hips, letting your arms hang.
3. Hold for 15-30 seconds while breathing deeply.
4. Slowly rise back up, stacking your spine from the bottom up.

Summer is the perfect time to get outside and move, but don’t let heat and overuse sideline your workouts! Here’s how to keep your muscles and joints in tip-top shape — and when to call in the pros:

✅ Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Dehydration can lead to muscle cramps and joint stiffness — aim for plenty of water before, during, and after your workouts.

✅ Warm up & cool down. A good warm-up gets your joints ready to move and muscles ready to fire. Cooling down helps prevent soreness and injuries.

✅ Mix it up. Give your joints a break by balancing high-impact activities (like running) with low-impact options (like swimming, cycling, or yoga).

✅ Listen to your body. Soreness is normal, but sharp or lingering pain isn’t. If something feels off, a physical therapist can help you recover and prevent bigger issues down the road.

Summer in Atlanta is no joke — the heat and humidity can sneak up on you fast. As physical therapists, we see it every year: dehydration leading to muscle cramps, fatigue, and slower recovery from injuries.

Here’s why staying hydrated matters:
💦 Water and electrolytes keep your muscles firing properly.
💦 Hydration helps prevent painful muscle cramps and spasms.
💦 Well-hydrated muscles recover faster and stay more flexible.

What can you do?
✅ Drink water steadily throughout the day — don’t wait until you’re thirsty!
✅ If you’re sweating a lot (running, gardening, outdoor sports), add electrolytes with a sports drink or coconut water.
✅ Snack on hydrating foods — watermelon, cucumbers, oranges, and leafy greens are your friends.
✅ Watch for signs of dehydration: dark urine, headaches, dizziness, or more muscle tightness than usual.

Bonus tip: If you’re recovering from an injury or working through PT exercises, hydration gives your muscles what they need to rebuild and repair.
