Home is where the heart is, but did you know it's also where three-quarters of falls happen? Simple changes can make a big impact. Here are a few home safety tips to help prevent falls:

1. 𝐍𝐨𝐧-𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐩 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐬: Place non-slip mats in the bathroom to avoid slips and falls, especially in wet areas.
2. 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐋𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠: Illuminate your home! Ensure proper lighting in all areas to spot potential hazards and navigate safely.
3. 𝐂𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐰𝐚𝐲𝐬: Declutter your living space. A tidy environment reduces the risk of tripping and stumbling.
4. 𝐒𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐝𝐲 𝐅𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞: Choose stable and sturdy furniture to provide support and prevent accidents.
5. 𝐆𝐫𝐚𝐛 𝐁𝐚𝐫𝐬: Install grab bars in bathrooms and other areas where extra support is needed.

Our therapists can provide balance and fall prevention screenings, which include helping to address modifiable risk factors, including home safety.

While exercise may be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about recovery, food is a factor that should not be overlooked. Ensuring your body has the proper nutrition during recovery is crucial for efficient healing and enhanced focus. Vitamin C, omega-3 fats, and protein are essential for the body's repair and cell activity. Luckily, incorporating these nutrients into your diet is easy with foods like fruits, fatty fish, and meats.

There are plenty of guides, resources, and tools to evaluate and create a healthy diet that will help you, including the CDC's Dietary Guidelines for Americans. https://bit.ly/3RQIyho

Always consult your healthcare provider to ensure your diet plan and foods are right for your recovery.

Do you have knee pain and want to know if it's serious? Knee pain is a common—and complex—complaint that affects people of all ages and can result from various causes, including injury or underlying health conditions. Ignoring knee pain is never a good idea.

𝐒𝐞𝐞𝐤 𝐦𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐡𝐞𝐥𝐩 𝐢𝐟:
•Have knee swelling
•You cannot fully extend or flex the knee
•Notice an obvious deformity in the knee joint
•Have a fever along with knee pain, swelling, or redness
•Your knee feels unstable or cannot support your weight
•You have intense knee pain after a fall or other type of accident
•Knee pain lasts longer than a few days and does not seem to be improving

If you're unsure about seeing a healthcare provider, remember that when it comes to your knees, it’s always better to err on the side of caution. To learn about “prehabilitation” and other physical therapy techniques and treatments for knee pain, find a physical therapy clinic near you. https://bit.ly/2PlppHQ

Having a pulled groin can be a painful experience, but there are steps you can take to prevent a muscle strain that will save you from a lot of discomfort.

Always stretch and warm up before any physical activity, and gradually increase the intensity of your training in 10% increments to avoid overstressing the adductors. Wear well-fitted, supportive footwear for your sport or activity, and listen to your body.

Physical therapy is also highly beneficial for active females to keep the groin muscles strong and flexible to prevent injuries. Never try to push through pain, and make an appointment with your physical therapist if you have soreness, tightness, or other groin pull symptoms. https://bit.ly/2PlppHQ

According to the CDC approximately 50 million adults in the U.S. are living with chronic pain. Pain lasting months or years can rob you of a good quality of life. While it may not be possible to cure or eliminate the underlying cause of pain entirely, there are many things you can do to reduce it to a manageable level.

Regular exercise, eating a balanced diet, getting enough sleep, and managing stress can all help. In addition, don't hesitate to ask for support from loved ones or a therapist. Pain can be overwhelming at times, but by taking steps to manage it, you can take back control of your life.

Back pain from muscle strain is something that many of us have experienced. Fortunately, you don’t have to live with the pain.

You can often treat back muscle strain at home. The most recent school of thought for treating soft tissue injuries involves the catchy acronym 𝑃.𝐸.𝐴.𝐶.𝐸 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐿.𝑂.𝑉.𝐸.

🔹𝐏rotection: Avoid activities that cause pain the first few days after an injury.
🔹𝐄levation: Elevate the injured limb above the heart if possible (not applicable with back strain.)
🔹𝐀void anti-inflammatories: This sounds counter-intuitive, but avoid ice and anti-inflammatory medications that can reduce tissue healing.
🔹𝐂ompression: Use taping or an elastic bandage to reduce swelling.
🔹𝐄ducation: Let nature take its course and avoid unnecessary, unproven treatments.
𝐴𝑛𝑑
🔹𝐋oad: Gradually increase load while listening to your body. Pain should be your guide.
🔹𝐎ptimism: Stay confident and positive to keep your brain in the right mindset for healing.
🔹𝐕ascularization: Resume activity with pain-free cardiovascular activities that increase blood flow.
🔹𝐄xercise: Take an active approach to recovery with exercise to restore strength and mobility.

If your pain and mobility challenges do not improve with at-home care, it may be time to try physical therapy. Schedule a physical therapy assessment to address your back pain and take the first steps toward healing. https://bit.ly/2PlppHQ

05/08/2023

For many people, summer is the perfect time to get back into exercising. But if it’s been a few months, you want to start out slowly and strategically.

Here are our top five tips to ensure a safe return to regular exercise:

𝟭. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗰𝗵-Prepare your body for an activity with an active warm-up of dynamic stretching followed by a cool-down with static stretching.

𝟮. 𝗙𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗮 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻-Progression in exercise is the concept of increasing the volume and intensity of training over time. This approach not only helps avoid injuries but also improves performance over time.

𝟯. 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝗳𝘆-Training diversity, or cross-training, allows the body to adapt to a wide variety of stressors, leading to a more optimal fitness level.

𝟰. 𝗦𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝗶𝘁 𝗢𝘂𝘁-If possible, spread your activity out throughout the week. You are better off scheduling shorter workouts every other day than cramming multiple intense workouts into the weekend.

𝟱. 𝗛𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲-Water is essential for nearly every system in the body to function well. A good rule of thumb for an adequate daily intake is around 11.5 cups (or 2.7 liters) for women and 15.5 cups (or 3.7 liters) for men. Add more for exercising in hot weather, if you sweat a lot or getting over an illness.

A home exercise program (HEP) is a customized set of therapeutic exercises that your PT will teach you. These "homework" exercises will help you reach your physical therapy goals and feel and/or move better long-term.

Following your (HEP) is so important and can help:
•Improve mobility
•Increase strength
•Develop muscle memory
•Prevent future injuries
•Experience therapeutic gains
•Increase the chance of recovery
•Build confidence and reduce the fear of injury
•Maintain strength and function for patients with chronic or progressive conditions

Every year, on March 31st, family and friends of Paige Neubauer spend time giving back to their communities in her memory. Paige, who was a close friend of our local PT, Kristen Dawson, had a heart for giving and spent her life making a positive impact everywhere she went. She planned on joining the Peace Corp after college and expanding her giving spirit across the world.

Please join us in spreading "good" to our community memory of Paige! We will be collecting items until March 31st for blessing bags to give to those in need in the community.
