🤰Understanding labor progression is key for expecting parents! Here are the 6 important factors to keep in mind as you await your 👶🏼 little one’s arrival:

1️⃣ Cervical Position - moves from posterior to anterior (back to front)
2️⃣ Softening - your body produces more prostaglandins at the end of pregnancy that settle in the cervical mucous and begin softening/ripening the cervix. This is an important step that takes time and occurs without you really noticing it.
3️⃣ Effacement - prostaglandins along with contractions help to thin/efface the cervix. This is measured from 0%-100%.
4️⃣ Dilation - measured in cm from 0-10. Sometimes this is the main thing people focus on, but it is just one piece to the process. Uterine contractions help the cervix to thin and dilate. With each contraction your body is expanding and opening!
5️⃣ Baby’s Station - this is where baby is in relation to your cervix.
6️⃣ Baby’s Rotation - baby makes 7 cardinal movements as they navigate the pelvis. It is not a straight line. Good, long, strong contractions plus movement and changing positions helps baby through the pelvis.

Knowing more about the way labor progresses can help ease anxieties and prepare you for the beautiful journey ahead. 🌟

Changing positions during the pushing stage offers numerous benefits:

1. More space in the pelvis: Positions can adjust the pelvis for smoother baby descent.

2. Reduced Perineal Trauma: Different positions help reduce pressue in one area the whole time, potentially reducing tearing.

3. Fetal Positioning: Encourages the baby's optimal birthing position.

4. More Effective Contractions: Gravity aids contractions, potentially shortening labor.

5. Comfort and Control: Finding positions that feel good to you in labor helps improve overall comfort and facilitate a more efficient labor. And it just feels better to YOU which helps you feel more empowered!

6. Reduced Instrumental Deliveries: May decrease the need for forceps or vacuum assistance.

Changing positions supports a more efficient, comfortable, and empowering birthing experience.
