Marian Central Catholic High School

Marian Central Catholic High School Established in 1959, Marian Central is a Roman Catholic Diocesan co-educational college-preparatory high school welcoming all students.

Established in 1959, Marian Central is a Roman Catholic Diocesan Co-educational College Preparatory High School. Marian Central offers a Catholic/Christian faith community where students are encouraged to grow intellectually and spiritually as they interact with each other, the church, and society. Our curriculum challenges all students, fosters academic excellence, encourages the development of critical thinking skills, promotes physical wellness, and leads to a commitment to life-long learning within a caring and moral educational environment. We prepare our students to be responsible citizens in society as well as active participants in the church and in the world. Most importantly, at Marian Central, we guide our students in character development and the establishment of ethical standards through the application of Catholic principles and the teaching mission of the Church. Last Friday, we hosted our second Career Day, giving students the opportunity to explore future pathways through two industry sessions of their choice, built into the school day. Professionals representing 19 different fields joined us to share insights into their day-to-day work and what their careers truly look like. We were especially proud to welcome back many of our own—over half of the presenters were Marian Central alumni who returned to share their experiences and inspire the next generation.

A special shoutout to our Keynote Speaker, Alex Benn '17, for starting the event off with energy and inspiration! A heartfelt thank-you to all the professionals who took time out of their day to empower our students! Your support makes a lasting impact.

At the beginning of November, Ms. Martinez’s Spanish class had a beautiful experience creating their own Day of the Dead altar together. The students learned about this meaningful Mexican tradition that honors and lovingly remembers those who are no longer with us.

During the activity, the students explored the meaning of each element on the altar:

Cempasúchil flowers, which guide the way with their bright color and fragrance.

Candles, representing the light that accompanies the souls.

Pan de mu**to (bread of the dead), a symbol of togetherness and community.

Photos and mementos, which keep memories alive.

Beyond being just a project, this was a wonderful opportunity to connect with culture and learn the value of remembrance and family.

With the November 1 College Application deadline done, Class of 2026 is planning for their futures! As of today, the Class of 2026 has submitted 299 college applications, representing 46 of our 62 seniors. From the 46 students who have sent in applications, each student is averaging the same 6.5 vs 6.6 applications compared to the Class of 2025.

So far, we’ve already received 29 acceptances! Our College Counselor, Mr. Wochner has already held 176 individual meetings with students this year, including at least one meeting with every senior. Additionally, Marian Central has hosted 77 college visits this fall (20 more than this time last year), with more scheduled for spring, including our annual CollegeStock event during lunch periods in March.

Of the 16 seniors who have not yet applied anywhere:
• 11 plan to attend McHenry County College or another community college. (MCC encourages students to apply in January once first-semester grades are available for placement and scholarship purposes.)
• 2 are waiting on athletic recruiting process, one swimmer and one wrestler.
• 2 have indicated plans to join trade unions.
• 1 student intends to enlist in the United States Marine Corps.

Is your 8th grader interested in joining Marian Central next year? To help place them in the courses where they’ll thrive, they’ll need to take the High School Placement

Test (HSPT). Here are the details:
When: Saturday, December 6 at 8:00 am
Where: Marian Central Catholic High School
Register: https://forms.office.com/r/YPatvppTXC

This test helps us get to know each student’s strengths, ensuring they start high school in the best classes for them. If your child currently attends one of the six McHenry Deanery Catholic Schools, great news—they’ll take the HSPT at their own school and won’t need to attend the session at Marian Central.

We’re looking forward to meeting the future Hurricanes and helping them start their high school journey strong!
