*Wellness Wednesday*
Back to school! Woo!! Depending on the age of the student, this phrase can be met with groans or grins. I don’t know if your experience mirrors mine, but my 7 year old was all grins this morning. (Maybe not when I was waking her up. I’ve learned to duck. She has a mean right hook) Either way, her wardrobe was painstakingly chosen, her hair braided; looking fierce, looking ready. So we are breakfasted, brushed, toileted, primped, preened, ready to rock. We go to put her shoes on and she says, “I think these are too tight.” So I look, and sure enough, this kid has grown (as kids tend to do.)
Foot health in a growing child, adolescent or young adult is extremely important. Especially when a child’s growth plates are open, they can be influenced by external factors, the most common of which are shoes. I have lots of patients who blame foot, ankle, leg, knee, hip and lower back issues on growing pains, but this is usually not the case. More times than not it is related to foot wear!
Your foot is the first thing that hits the ground, so if it is not supported, the joints above it have to compensate. As the song goes, the foot bone’s connected to the ankle bone; the ankle bone’s connected to the leg bone; leg – knee, knee – thigh…. I’m not gonna sing the whole song, but I think you get the idea.
