February is American Heart Month, and it's the perfect time to talk about the connection between your menopause journey and your heart health. ❤️

Here's something that catches many of us off guard: the same hormonal changes causing your hot flashes are also affecting your heart. As estrogen declines, cardiovascular risk rises.

📉What's Happening to Your Body: Declining estrogen levels can increase the risk of diabetes, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels, all risk factors for heart disease. And those hot flashes and night sweats are not benign. They increase heart disease risk too.

🧘What You Can Do Right Now: Regular movement, heart-healthy eating, and stress management are your power tools. Plus, here's something exciting from recent research: mammograms in some women spot an early sign of heart disease - breast arterial calcification (BAC).

Don't wait to prioritize your heart health! Talk to your healthcare provider about your cardiovascular risk factors and build a plan that fits your unique menopause journey and your real life.

Next up in the series to support your menopause journey: Gut Health & Nutrition 🥗

While modern medicine often focuses on medication and supplements, there is less discussion about the power of paying attention to what’s on your plate.

Research and clinical studies from around the world show that food and your gut microbiome can directly affect how you feel during the menopause journey. Yet, a poll conducted during Menopause Awareness Month found fewer than half of women realized diet can influence the number and severity of hot flashes, e.g., coffee/tea, spicy food, processed food, alcohol, and sugary beverages. What you eat truly matters!

Your gut microbiome is directly impacted by what you eat and drink. An unhealthy microbiome - not enough variety of organisms, too few or too many of certain organisms, bacteria foreign to your body - can affect your mood, cause a change in bowel habits and gas/bloating, drive cravings, and disrupt the balance of the hormones which help manage weight.

Swipe through for practical ways to use “food as medicine”to support your body and feel your best on the menopause journey. Keeping a journal for a week or two may also help you identify foods that cause a problem for you.

A recent Mayo Clinic study found that even when severe symptoms affected daily life, few women were seeking care or receiving treatment. Why are 80% of us doing this to ourselves?

The study noted that women often do not bring up concerns about menopausal symptoms to their healthcare professional.

There are no trophies for “toughing it out” during the menopause journey! So, we’re going to provide you with questions to get the conversation going if your clinician does not bring up the topic themselves.

First up in the series to support your menopause journey: Mental and Emotional Health 🎭

Having mixed emotions after the holidays? Some people feel energized and motivated about the start of a new year, others are exhausted and lonely, and many are dealing with the aftermath of December bills and work that has piled up during days off.

Today is a great time to explore new ways to support your mental health and emotional well-being, leaving you grounded and feeling more confident, no matter the challenges that arise.

Mental health is a big deal. It affects your physical health and vice versa. The hormonal transition increases the risk of new-onset anxiety and/or depression, and can trigger an episode if you’ve experienced these conditions before. And, according to a recent Sage Journal article, during perimenopause, some women may also be more likely to have suicidal thoughts/plans. Hormonal changes can also make you feel anger or even rage.

If you had diabetes and your blood sugar was sky high, most people would contact their doctor to get things under control. Your mental health is no different.

⚠️If you’re finding it difficult to get through the day whether at home or work, do not hesitate to seek help from a medical professional. If you are in crisis or need emotional support right now, call 988 for counseling resources 24/7 to help get things back on track. Calling 911 is also an option in a mental health emergency.

Swipe through to see actions you can take to support your emotional and mental health. You’ll feel less overwhelmed and more in control.

Feeling like taking charge of your health just got easier? It did.

The HRSA just updated its guidelines to include at-home self collection testing for cervical cancer screening for women aged 30 to 65 with average risk. This means you can now collect your own HPV sample in an office or from the comfort of home, if that feels right for you.

Prefer to stick with an in office HPV test or Pap smear? That is still absolutely an option.

If you are between 21 and 29, the recommendation remains the same for an in-office Pap screening. With the FDA approvals in 2024 and 2025 and the American Cancer Society’s updated guidance in December, self collection is becoming a bigger part of women’s preventive care. A win for access and flexibility!
