ANGER, ITS EFFECT ON THE BODY, AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Whether you're aware of it or not, your body is always responding to your emotions—anger included.

Every emotion triggers a chemical reaction in your body, and anger is no exception. When anger rises, a corrosive cocktail of chemicals spreads throughout your system. If the root cause of that anger remains unresolved, this "ignition" can repeatedly flare up, reactivating the same chemical response. The impact on your body can be profound: these chemicals slowly chip away at your joints, leading to conditions like arthritis, inflame your organs, and create other physical discomforts. Over time, this unrelenting cycle of stress and inflammation can lead to both chronic and acute pain.

What’s important to understand is that the true source of anger is often not an angry place at all. More often than not, it’s a part of you that feels scared, vulnerable, or fragile and is simply asking for your attention and care. This part of you needs your compassion.

A healthy way to access and nurture that vulnerable part is to first express your anger. This doesn’t necessarily mean directing your anger toward the person or situation that triggered it. Instead, try releasing that energy in a way that feels safe and controlled.

For instance, hitting a tennis racket against your bed can be a cathartic way to physically release that built-up energy. Or, you might find relief in letting loose with an unfiltered rant in your car when you're alone. Once you’ve purged that aggressive energy, you might notice that tears of surrender follow—allowing the vulnerable part of you to rise to the surface, asking, "Why?"

In those moments, it's essential to pause and listen. Don’t rush to make that part of you “stronger” or “toughen up.” Simply be present with your feelings. Let that part of you be heard, understood, and comforted. You might say, “I’m so sorry that this has been so hard. I’m here for you, and I’ll support you.”

After this process, you may notice that your body starts to calm down as well—perhaps with less pain or a sense of ease.

It’s important to remember that this isn’t a one-time fix. You might need to repeat this process, again and again, to fully move through your anger and pain. But each time you do, you’re showing up for yourself, giving yourself the care and attention you deserve.

All my best,
Shalan Hill

Why We Don’t Call It “Deep Tissue” Massage

We often get phone calls asking for “Deep Tissue Massage.” Our response is always the same: We practice corrective massage.

Corrective massage is different from simply “going deep where it hurts.” Pushing hard into painful areas rarely benefits the body. Instead, our approach is both direct and indirect — we address the area of pain, but we also correct the muscle imbalances that are actually creating the pain.

Our work is mindful, therapeutic, and effective. Clients often describe it as “not a fluff massage.” At times, it can feel intense — but always within your body’s comfort level. We encourage open communication during sessions so your body can receive the work, release spasms, and let go of protective contractions.

The body has to trust the process. If pressure is applied without consideration, the body resists — making the massage ineffective, or worse, creating more pain. Likewise, focusing only where it hurts is like “beating an injured player.” The painful area is usually the victim, not the cause. Experienced therapists look deeper to find the real culprits: the muscles causing imbalance.

Corrective massage is how we help people get out of pain and back into balance.

You’re welcome!
