The DAISY Award is an international recognition program that honors and celebrates the skillful, compassionate care nurses provide every day. The DAISY Foundation was established by the family of J. Patrick Barnes after he died from complications of the auto-immune disease ITP in 1999. During his hospitalization, they deeply appreciated the care and compassion shown to Patrick and his entire family. When he died, they felt compelled to say "thank you" to nurses in a very public way.

Cottage Hospital has partnered with the DAISY Foundation to award our nurses for the extraordinary work they provide to our patients and their families.
Please help us in honoring, JD Santelices, from Med Surg, our Winter DAISY Award winner for Extraordinary Nurses.

His nomination Reads:
"There is not one specific story that could clearly demonstrate how JD makes a meaningful difference in care, because he always makes a difference in every aspect of care he provides. It doesn’t matter if he is doing regular RN duties by giving medications, assessing a patient, performing skin checks, checking wounds, toileting a patient, making sure they are comfortable, checking if patients are hungry of thirsty, trying to figure out what the patients is saying if they are difficult to understand or just being a companion to the patient for a little bit, allowing them to feel comforted, heard and cared for."

"JD is one of the best nurses I have ever met in my sixteen years of being an LNA. He is willing to learn new things to better himself and better his patient care. He is willing to jump in and help anyone no matter what is going on or if he is doing something else at the time. He goes far above and beyond for not only his patients, but his co-workers as well."

"JD will drop what they are doing in an instant to offer a helping hand. He is the definition of what a role model nurse should be and if anyone deserves this award, it’s this RN for sure."

If you or anyone you know have recieved care from one of the many wonderful nurses here at Cottage Hospital and you would like to nominate them for the DAISY Award, please visit our website and make a submission!

Last month, we had the pleasure of welcoming curious young minds from French Pond School to Cottage Hospital for a behind-the-scenes look at the world of diagnostic imaging!

These 5th–8th grade students are currently studying the skeletal system, making this visit a perfect real-world connection to what they’re learning in the classroom. Our team introduced them to different imaging modalities and explained how each one helps providers see inside the body to diagnose and treat patients.

🩻 X-ray: Students learned how X-rays help us view bones and detect fractures.
🖥 CT Scanner: They explored how CT imaging provides detailed cross-section views of the body.
🔊 Sonography (Ultrasound): They discovered how sound waves are used to create images of organs and soft tissues.

The group also toured our newly renovated Med Surg patient rooms, where they saw how modern hospital spaces are designed with patient comfort, safety, and healing in mind.

We love inspiring the next generation of healthcare professionals and showing students how science and technology come together to care for our community. Thank you for visiting, French Pond School — we hope to see some of you back here one day in scrubs! 💙

🦠 Flu Season Is in Full Swing — Here’s How to Stay Healthy

Flu cases are rising, and the most common strain this year is Influenza A H3N2, which can sometimes cause more severe illness. Typical symptoms include fever, chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and headache.

🛡️ Protect yourself and your family:
✔ Get your flu shot — it can still help protect you from multiple strains, even if you’ve already been sick
✔ Wash your hands often and cover coughs and sneezes
✔ Stay home when you’re feeling unwell and consider masking around others

🩺 If you get sick:
Testing can help determine whether you have flu, COVID-19, or RSV, which guides treatment. Antiviral medications like Tamiflu work best when started early. Rest, fluids, and symptom relief medications can also help you recover more comfortably.

🏥 Where to go for care:
Most flu symptoms can be managed through your primary care provider or urgent care. The Emergency Department is available for testing, but should be used for severe symptoms like trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, dehydration, or if you are at higher risk and symptoms are worsening.

Let’s work together to keep our community healthy this flu season 💙
