LAHIIRI EYE CENTER
COVID-19 RELEASE
Most Eye Emergency Department Visits Can Be Treated in Optometry Clinics. With America’s hospitals starting to experience shortages in supplies such as masks gowns and gloves, there is no question that the health care system is overwhelmed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Optometry Association of Louisiana is reminding citizens that most eye issues, such as infections, foreign bodies and eye injuries, can be treated by your local Optometrist, eliminating the need to go to an emergency room at a local hospital, and risking contact with others who may be infected. According to Dr. Jonathan Bowman, President of the Optometry Association of Louisiana, “Why expose yourself to COVID-19 at an emergency room when you can see a Doctor of Optometry?” He continued by stating that the current strain on the healthcare system can be reduced by this simple act. Louisiana Doctors of Optometry are the primary eye doctors for family members of all ages. They diagnose and treat diseases of the eye and can also perform LASER surgical procedures. Awareness of the cost of health care decisions is critical at all levels of health care.
Many patients obtain care in emergency departments (EDs) that can be obtained in a less costly outpatient setting.
According to the American Optometric Association, most eye-related conditions reported in the emergency department may be treatable in an outpatient optometry office or clinic. Visits to your Doctor of Optometry, instead of an emergency department, can save money, decrease
burden on the health care system and reduce exposure to COVID-19. It makes sense to utilize this community resource.

Back to Basics…

Ignaz Philip Semmelweis
Name sounds familiar? Not.
Ignaz was a Hungarian physician born on July 1st 1818. As an obstetrician working in Vienna General Hospital, he had noticed that the infection fatality rate was a third when deliveries were performed by midwives versus the physicians. He concluded that the increase in fatalities were due to the fact that physicians and medical school students performed autopsies before attending to the pregnant women. When he initiated hand washing in the study, the fatality rate of women treated by physicians was equal to that of midwives. He then initiated washing the instruments and that led to an even lower fatality rate. That being said, handwashing was heavily criticized. Although he was the first healthcare provider to demonstrate infection control through the simple act of handwashing, his theory was not acknowledged until about 20 years after his death when the germ theory was developed by Pasteur and others.

As we try to navigate the current pandemic crisis, please remember the importance of frequent handwashing to minimize the risk to yourself and others around you.

Thank you Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis.

Pinkeye may be an early symptom of coronavirus, ophthalmologists warn
Red, itchy and teary eyes could be an early symptom of having the novel coronavirus, the American Academy of Ophthalmology cautioned eye doctors.
Patients with conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, who have other symptoms including fever and respiratory problems, could be infected with the coronavirus, according to an alert the professional medical association released Wednesday. Pinkeye is an inflammation of the thin, clear tissue that lies over the white part of the eye.
The academy cited a recent study that found about 1 out of every 30 coronavirus patients in China reviewed had pinkeye.
A nurse at the Life Care Center in Kirkland, Wash., which has since been tied to 129 cases, told CNN she noticed the residents who became sick first developed red, puffy eyes beforehand.
Still, as spring’s allergy season kicks off, it’s worth remembering that itchy eyes might be symptomatic of the pollen rather than the pandemic.

Call our office at (601) 888-6868. Our doctors can talk to you if you are having these symptoms and treat you or send for further testing.
