I am the nurse manager of the Special Care Nursery at Akron Children’s. Located inside the Women’s Pavilion. I wanted to share a condensed version of my story and how the WP supported me throughout my entire journey.

My husband and I went through a long, stressful, painful and expensive infertility journey. Like many couples, we were 100% “unexplained infertility” so never having answers was hard. We went through more tests than I can count. Surgeries. Ovulatory medications. Three rounds of IUI’s. Two miscarriages. All of which I had the support of the staff at WP to help me. They’re like an extension of my family. They treat all patients this way, it’s incredible.

Our third pregnancy stuck. We decided not to find out the gender. I was a nervous wreck and always had a ton of questions. As the pregnancy progressed, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. This is something the WP is very comfortable in managing, so they reassured me week after week.

At 39 weeks I was induced because of the diabetes. I was also terrified of that, but the staff took care of me in ways I didn’t even know existed. They had all of the toys available to me to try and help me labor as natural as possible despite needing to be induced. I tried nitrous oxide when the contractions got more intense. Not long after I got an epidural and continued to progress nicely. Then I stalled at 8cm. We did a couple hours of different positions trying to help progress labor, all of which the nurses were my rock because I had no control over my lower body. They didn’t leave my room. After 8 hours, I never progressed and we ended up with a c-section. The staff explained everything clearly and helped ease my fear and anxiety. Within 15 minutes, we finally got to meet our baby GIRL!

Our postpartum experience was as phenomenal as our labor experience. Every staff member was amazing and supportive. I truly cannot say enough great things about our experience.

Here is a video a friend made us to capture our journey 💕

As a first time mom, you have no clue what to expect. Labor, delivery, pregnancy in general. You hear incredible stories and you hear horror stories. I am thankful to have the team in Bloomington Women's Care & the Women’s Pavilion because our L&D experience was amazing.

I truly cannot say enough about our experience at Wooster Community Hospital. Every single nurse we had during our stay was incredible. Mackenzie was so kind, helpful, and supportive. She helped me through basically my whole laboring process and delivery. Accommodating every need and request, giving every hand hold and all the reassurance in the world that I could do it, and just flat out being an incredible nurse and person.

Dr. Vandevelde is a pure ray of sunshine and I am grateful she delivered my sweet Avery. The passion she holds for her career truly shows. She has never treated me like “just another patient”, you can tell she truly cares.

Carman was also an incredible nurse. The raw moments after birth, like finally getting up and going to the bathroom after the epidural wears off and putting together a giant pad with mesh underwear was a very humbling experience and I’m eternally grateful for her support and help during that time, and all the check ins after that & throughout our stay in the hospital.

Which brings me to lactation- everyone that I had met was so helpful and amazing with getting any answers for the questions that I had. Breastfeeding was single-handedly the hardest thing I had ever experienced and visiting Kirstin and all other consultants gave me the confidence and motivation to keep trying and it has become such a breeze, and has helped me bond with my baby in the best way.

I will forever be grateful to each and every person who had helped us during pregnancy, L&D, and postpartum.

We want to celebrate YOU! Tell us your due date or share a picture in the comments of who’s celebrating birthdays this month!

𝘿𝙚𝙘𝙚𝙢𝙗𝙚𝙧 𝗕𝗶𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗙𝘂𝗻 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘀!
• The flowers for the month of December are holly and paperwhites. Paperwhites symbolizes rebirth and respect.
• The birthstones of December are zircon, tanzanite, & turquoise. Turquoise represents prosperity, success, and good fortune
• These last-month-born kiddos are little beacons of light, thought to be endowed with good fortune and good health.

Did you know those born in December have the most even-keeled disposition of all. That’s exciting news for the toddler years 😉 Babies born in December have the least amount of temper tantrums throughout their childhood compared to babies born any other time of year!

Happy birthday!!! 🌲☃️♥️

•Testimony Tuesday•

I gave birth to my sweet girl, Amelia Nicole, on August 26th, 2022. I was induced at 39 weeks and 4 days. I started my induction at 8am and I was already 2.5cm dilated upon arrival. By noon, the doctor had come in to break my water and that’s when the contractions really started hitting hard. I labored without any medication until 5pm then asked to receive an epidural. Medication was not in my birth plan and I received nothing but compassion and respect from the nurses and doctors upon changing my plan. By 7pm I was 6cm dilated and was in transition by 10 pm. I only pushed for 26 minutes and my beautiful 7lb 6oz girl was there that same night at 10:26pm.

All of the nurses provided me with so much information and support as I struggled with latching and my baby struggled with high bilirubin levels. I cannot wait to have my future birthing experiences at WCH! ❤️

We had our son in April 2019 and our daughter in August 2022. I cannot put into words how amazing the staff is at the Women's Pavillion. We had planned c-sections for both and everything was so calm. The doctors and nurses kept us informed every step of the way. I recommend Wooster Hospital and Bloomington Women's Care to everyone I know!
