Here’s something you probably didn’t know:

At least five of our nation’s Presidents have had hearing loss including one whose birthday month is February and is half of the reason we celebrate Presidents Day this month. (Can you guess which one below?)

George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt all fell victim to hearing loss due to rifle and canon fire. Roosevelt actually underwent a procedure on his ear drum in his left ear that unfortunately left him deaf in that ear.

A more recent president with hearing loss is Ronald Reagan. Although Reagan served in the military, it was actually from a black .38 caliber that caused his hearing loss. He was acting in a movie when it went off too close to one of his ears and that's what started the problems. When he was inaugurated in 1983, Reagan became the first president to wear hearing aids while in office. Because of this prominent public exposure, hearing aids rose in sales and research.

And finally, Bill Clinton suffered hearing loss but not from any gunfire. Clinton loved to play the saxophone and surround himself with music. It was this constant exposure that actually damaged his hearing. Because of this, in 1997 he was fitted with nearly invisible hearing aids. To this day, former President Clinton encourages people to get their hearing checked and discusses the importance of wearing hearing aids when necessary.

In honor of Presidents Day, we hope you have a wonderful day and that you get your hearing checked!

So what can you expect if you have an in-office procedure with us such as an ear tube placement, nasal endoscopy, or a biopsy? We’ll tell you!

We know there is comfort in knowing exactly what to expect every step of the way, so our first step in making sure you are as comfortable as possible is to begin by explaining the procedure to you and any after care that is required. Then, during the procedure, we will tell you what’s going on step by step so that you are always aware of everything and never surprised.

But will it hurt? Not really. There is rarely any discomfort with these procedures, and if there is, it is minimal.

How long will it take? Each procedure varies, but we will always let you know what to expect and how long it should take!

And lastly, please ask us any questions you would like! We are always at your service here in the Wooster area.

Snoring (like what our furry friend is doing here) results from vibration of the structures of the nose, throat, or back of tongue from the movement of air over these structures with breathing.

This often occurs with certain sleeping positions, especially back sleeping which means that changes to sleep position may give relief.

If you can't seem to stop the snoring or keep yourself from sleeping on your back, an old time remedy involves sewing a pocket on the back of a night shirt into which a tennis ball can be placed, keeping the sleeper from rolling onto their back.

Avoiding alcohol, avoiding sedatives, and experiencing weight loss can help to reduce snoring as well.

When snoring is accompanied by pauses in breathing, difficulty rousing in the morning, excess daytime fatigue, irritability, or excess napping—sleep apnea, which is a more serious condition, may be present. This can be diagnosed with a sleep test to determine the severity and causes. Treatments may involve correction of nasal obstruction, dental appliances to lift the tongue, CPAP (breathing masks), tongue reduction, or (more recently) implants to elevate the tongue while sleeping. Evaluation by multiple specialists may be needed, but we can help in the evaluation of these options and provide some surgical options if necessary.

If you or a loved one deal with snoring, try out these methods to see if they help! And if you see any of the latter symptoms, give us a call. We would love to help you get a good nights sleep.

Did you know that we offer video-microscopy in our office?

This allows you as the patient to have the same view as the physician when he is examining the ear or other small structures. Not only is this a fun and rare opportunity to look in your own ear, it helps us to have a conversation about what is going on with your health, understand and see the disease process, and monitor the response to treatment.

Luckily, our very own Sharon Grimes had a very clean inner ear!

Winter warmth means dry air, and, for some, nosebleeds—especially as we grow older or take blood thinning medication. Here is what we recommend for those of you who suffer from nosebleeds.

First, if you can keep from having a one, do it!
Prevention of nasal dryness by adding a humidifier or applying ointment to the inside of the nose (a pea sized amount of petroleum jelly or antibiotic ointment like you would apply to a skin cut) can help keep these tissues moist and reduce the risk of bleeding.

If you do have a nosebleed, try to stay calm. Here are some steps to follow:

1. Clear the nose by gently blowing as the clotted blood will actually prevent your nose from being able to stop bleeding.
2. Then hold firm pressure to the soft parts of the nose (the lower third) for at least 10 minutes. This will get most bleeding to stop.
3. If bleeding does not stop or slow after 30 minutes, then it is time to seek professional care.

If you have any questions, add them below! And if you have a nosebleed that won't stop, we are here for you.
