🌬️ Intentional breathing

It sounds simple—but it’s powerful.

Slow, intentional breathing tells your nervous system that you’re safe. It can lower anxiety, reduce stress hormones, slow racing thoughts, and help regulate emotions in real time.

Why it works:
1.) Activates the parasympathetic (“calm”) nervous system
2.) Helps ground you in the present moment
3.) Can interrupt panic, overwhelm, and spiraling thoughts

Try this anywhere, anytime:
1.) Inhale through your nose for 4 seconds
2.) Hold for 4 seconds
3.) Exhale slowly through your mouth for 6 seconds
4.) Repeat for 1–2 minutes

No equipment. No special setting. Just a few breaths that can shift your entire state.

🌟 Volunteer Spotlight 🌟

Meet Dennis Helmuth, MD, PhD, a longtime supporter and volunteer with NAMI Wayne & Holmes Counties. Dr. Helmuth helped start and continues to support NAMI WH’s Health and Wellness Program, and every few months he shares his knowledge through a “Friendly Neighborhood Psychiatrist” talk. As a board-certified psychiatrist, he brings both professional expertise and genuine compassion to everything he does.

Dennis has been involved with NAMI for many years. He and his wife, Kathy, are past honorees at the Walk for Wellness and recipients of the Handwerk Service Award, reflecting their deep commitment to mental health advocacy in our community.

Throughout his career, Dennis has dedicated himself to helping individuals living with mental health conditions, while also holding great empathy for the families who walk alongside them. He believes NAMI is the best peer support organization for individuals and families affected by mental illness, and we are incredibly grateful for his continued support and leadership.

💙 Thank you, Dennis, for being such a meaningful part of the NAMI Wayne and Holmes Counties family.

🌿 Wellness Wednesday Tip 🌿

Feeling stressed or overwhelmed? Here’s a small but powerful way to reset: take three slow, deep breaths.

It only takes about a minute, but it can help calm your mind, lower stress, and bring you back to the present moment. You can do this anywhere — at work, at home, or even in the car (parked, of course!).

Sometimes, the smallest actions make the biggest difference for your mental wellness. 💙

✨ Try it now and see how you feel!
