If you’ve ever struggled with addiction, you know the feeling… you want to stop. You may have tried to stop. But sometimes it feels impossible.

And if you’ve ever loved someone who’s struggling, you may have thought,“Why can’t they just stop?”

That question sits at the center of one of the biggest debates in addiction:Is it a choice… or something deeper?

In our latest blog, Clinical Director John Copeland breaks down what’s really going on—and why the answer isn’t as simple as people think.

👉 Tell us: what’s something you wish more people understood about addiction or recovery?

Is addiction inherited or a result of choices? The answer is more complex. Learn how both biology and behavior shape substance use and recovery.

He knew he was going to rehab.
He drank anyway.

“My last drink was before the Uber got here.”

“I’m just tired of living the way I was.”

“People can tell you what’s possible… but when they show you, that’s a whole other level.”

This isn’t a scripted story.

❤️ It’s real people.
❤️ Real turning points.
❤️ Real recovery.

Rhino Tranq is showing up in of New England. 🚨

Rhino Tranq is a potentially lethal drug combo containing the veterinary sedative, medetomidine, and opioids, like fentanyl.

👉Why that matters:

• These sedatives aren’t meant for human use
• They can significantly slow breathing and heart rate
• They may not respond to naloxone in the same way opioids do
• Effects can be longer-lasting and harder to predict

This is shift in the drug supply is putting people at greater risk. This is a new threat every treatment provider and everyone who knows someone using opioids needs to understand.

Save and share this.

We don’t talk enough about how hard it is to know what to saywhen someone you love is struggling with alcohol.

So we fall back on frustration.
Ultimatums.
Words we don’t actually mean.

Breaking the silence isn’t just about talking about alcohol use, it’s about how we show up in those conversations.

👉 Save this. It could help more than you think!

He has a job.
She pays the bills.
He goes to the gym.
She shows up… most of the time.

So this isn’t a problem… right?

Wrong.

When alcohol use looks “high-functioning,” it often just means the consequences haven’t caught up yet.

Here’s what people ignore:

• Joking about how much they drink
• Every situation revolves around alcohol
• “At least I’m not as bad as…”
• Getting defensive when it’s brought up
• Needing it to relax, sleep, or socialize
• Quitting… and always going back
• Being there physically, but not really present

You don’t have to lose everything to have a problem.

And you don’t have to hit rock bottom to take a closer look.

If this feels a little too familiar, don’t ignore it.

If you've been here for some time, you know that Mike Diamond, Recovery Advocate, does a lot of our weekend videos.

Well… this weekend, we’re giving Mike the time off. And for a very good reason:
He’s celebrating 20 years in recovery! 🎉

20 years of showing up.
20 years of doing the work.
20 years of choosing a different path again and again.

We asked Mike what it takes to reach a milestone like this, and he shared 3 things that have helped him navigate life’s ups and downs:
• Stay connected — When he feels angry, resentful, or frustrated, he checks in with another sober person instead of checking out.
• Don’t take things personally — “It’s just information… good, bad,
or indifferent.”
• Stay present — Appreciate what you have right now, because this moment is the only one guaranteed.

Simple, but not always easy. And clearly, it works.

Mike, we’re grateful for you, your honesty, and the way you show up for others.

👏 Help us celebrate Mike. Drop some love in the comments for 20 years in recovery!

We see every day how complicated -- and how human -- recovery really is.

That’s why we’re proud to promote director Jeffrey D. Shulman's new documentary, "What It Takes" -- a film about addiction, recovery, and the moments that remind people change is still possible.

Told through real stories -- including a former patient from our Orange County, CA sister center -- the film challenges how people understand addiction and what it really takes to find a way forward.

Cannabis is legal in Massachusetts. 👉 But legal doesn’t mean safe for everyone.

Across the Bay State we’re seeing a lot of mixed messages, especially around things like stress relief, sleep, menopause, and even brain health.

Here’s what current research actually suggests:
👉 Cannabis is being used for symptom relief, but much of the data is still limited and self-reported
👉 It’s often seen as a “safer alternative,” yet it still carries real risks for mental health and cognitive function
👉 Research on brain health is mixed. Some findings suggest potential benefits, while others link regular use to memory and attention challenges

What matters most? Access has increased. Potency has increased. But public understanding hasn’t always kept up.

Cannabis isn’t one-size-fits-all, and it isn’t risk-free, especially with frequent use or higher-THC products.

This isn’t about judgment. It’s about having the full picture.

💬 Where do you see the biggest gap between what people believe about cannabis and what you’ve actually experienced?

Counselors and therapists make it possible for people to take the first real step toward change.

Behind every recovery story, there’s someone who helped carry the weight when it was too heavy to hold alone.
Counselors and therapists do that work every day.
💚 They sit in the hard moments.
💚 They hold space for stories people have never said out loud.
💚 They show up, again and again, with patience, honesty, and care.

This National Counseling Awareness Month, we’re taking a moment to say thank you to the people who show up, listen, and help make change possible.

04/14/2026

⚠️Cannabis isn’t as harmless as many people believe.

During National Cannabis Awareness Month, we’re taking a closer look at what often gets overlooked.

As legalization expands, so does the perception that cannabis is “safe.” But research -- and real clinical experience -- tell a more complicated story.👈

Regular use has been linked to:
• Increased risk of heart attack and stroke
• Symptoms of anxiety, mania, and psychosis
• Impaired memory, judgment, and decision-making

🚨And for some populations, the risks are even greater:
• During pregnancy, cannabis use may impact birth weight
• Early exposure may affect long-term mental development and behavior

This isn’t about fear; it’s about understanding the full picture.

🎥 In this video, Dr. Mitrevolis, medical director at our sister center in Southern California, breaks down what’s happening and why it matters.

If you or someone you love has questions about cannabis use and mental health, we’re here to help. Send us a private message to learn more.

When people hear “Medicare,” they often think it doesn’t apply to them, or that it won’t cover the care they need.

But for many older adults, Medicare is one of the most important pathways to treatment -- including support for substance use and mental health.

The truth is, addiction doesn’t have an age limit. And in later life, it can be harder to recognize, sometimes showing up as changes in sleep, mood, or memory.

👉 If something feels off, it’s worth paying attention to.

Support is out there. And it may be more accessible than you think.
