To all those that have been following along,

We are happy to announce that an agreement has been reached with the hospital.

We have secured clear language that separates the needs of the North Pavilion from our 911 operation.

The medics staffing the NPAV will be there on a volunteer basis, under their own job description, and will be paid a 3% stipend for doing so.

Hiring for the existing open positions will begin as soon as possible, with more positions to follow shortly after.

We thank you all for the outpouring of support we have received this week, and over the years. We take great pride in knowing the community we love to serve also supports us in our times of need.

Respectfully,
WEMS IAEP Local 95

There are only three ambulances covering the City today, and just one in Shrewsbury. There is no Lieutenant on duty. This is yet another clear example of how severely understaffed we are, with or without the Pavilion. We’re grateful for our mutual aid partners stepping in to help, but at the end of the day it’s our responsibility to protect and care for our community, and we need the staffing to do it safely!

Thank you to all who have interacted with our posts and shared across multiple platforms. With your support we believe we can come to a resolution that benefits all involved.

We have received a few questions about our recent press release and we will do our best to answer them here.

Back in January the hospital opened the North Pavilion which is a satellite inpatient building in the former University Commons Nursing Home. This new facility aimed to have over 70 inpatient beds, decompressing the hospital from the backlog of patients sitting in the ED waiting for inpatient beds. This is known as boarding. During the planning and building of the Pavilion the hospital came to the WEMS with a problem, one that they want us to fix. They had no option for providers that could intubate at the facility. For one reason or another, our medics were tasked to do that. The hospital attached an addendum to our job description with a new job title, RAMS. The role of the WEMS paramedics stationed at the Pavilion was to assist with resuscitation, intubate patients and draw labs a handful of times per quarter.

To accomplish this, WEMS put 2 paramedics at the Pavilion as a regular work assignment. The hospital backfilled the 24 hour ALS truck they were taking off of the street by adding hours to a BLS truck making that a 24 hour unit. The hospital has made staffing the Pavilion a priority over staffing the street. If a medic calls out at the Pavilion or a shift is not filled, the hospital will down an ALS truck on the street to shift staffing. At times, we are left with one ALS truck and a lone medic in a fly car in addition to our Lieutenant and Captain.

Local 95 has made every effort to explain to the hospital that we cannot afford to lose any street level ambulances let alone ALS level ambulances. We are in the final year of our CBA with the hospital. We are asking for a bandaid to get us to negotiations. Our members are overworked. They are doing as many ambulance calls as they possibly can. We are a system that is severely understaff and underfunded. What we are asking for is below.

1. Create positions that make the Pavilion medics voluntary and make it a separate unit from the street, much like our ED medics or MIH medics.
2. Fill the current open positions and increase our staffing levels.
3. A 3% stipend for shifts working at the Pavilion, like MIH, to incentivize the Pavilion role.

We hope this answers some of the questions out there. We appreciate the support and those that have reached out. We will continue to do the very best we can for the public and all who need our assistance.

Please see the attached press release regarding our ongoing struggles in negotiating the impact of our members assignment to roles outside of our 911 service.

Our members are committed to providing exceptional patient care in our service areas and beyond, but have not been given the adequate staffing and support to do so safely.

We urge UMMH to come back to the table and reach an agreement that protects our members and the patients that we serve.

Thank you for your ongoing support!

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of one of our longest standing members, Paramedic Phil Krause #106. A 25 year veteran of our department, who bravely battled pancreatic cancer with strength and grace.

Phil was more than just a dedicated paramedic, he was the kind of person whose big smile could light up a room and whose larger than life presence left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Whether it was on the job or in the community, Phil brought compassion, humor, and heart to everything he did.

His legacy of service, kindness, and camaraderie will not be forgotten.

Please keep Phil’s family, friends, and colleagues in your thoughts during this incredibly difficult time.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Worcester EMS Relief Association PO Box 2661, Worcester MA 01613.

Rest easy Phil, we've got it from here!
