Physical Therapist Chris Accettella and Madilyn Mays have a special relationship. Madilyn, who has cerebral palsy, needed numerous occupational and physical therapy sessions. Working together, Madilyn was able to achieve unimaginable milestones.
"My mom thought something was not right," she said. "I was not growing like my brother and sister."
Madilyn's mom would get her answer, and be connected with Chris. Chris started working with Madilyn as a baby. Therapy spanned several years; they worked together in various areas, including mobility, flexibility, coordination and both gross and fine motor skills. Madilyn did not always want to go to therapy and sometimes found the session extremely difficult. Chris, however, encouraged her to try. She believed in Madilyn.
As I got older, I realized that Chris was actually my biggest help," Madilyn shared. "She never gave up on me and taught me not to give up on myself."
The results of their teamwork over the years paid off, culminating in Madilyn's quinceañera outing. Madilyn was able to dance with her father, mother, family and friends unbound by the constraints of a wheelchair. Some of her additional accomplishments include running, riding a bike, playing drums and jewelry designing. Madilyn currently has her own jewelry business.
"Just keep trying and doing your best," Madilyn shared. "Your therapist will help you with the things you need to do so you can do the things you want to do."
We are so happy to see you thrive, Madilyn. Thank you for choosing us on your rehabilitation journey.
