The Department of Neurological Surgery at UMass Chan Medical School and UMass Memorial Health is pleased to announce that Nathan Yingling from UMass Chan Medical School will be our seventh resident in Neurological Surgery. Nate grew up in Barnstable, Massachusetts and earned a BS degree in Neuroscience from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. He then worked in the gene therapy laboratory of Provost Terence Flotte at UMass Chan and as an English teacher in Spain before enrolling in medical school in 2020. Nate’s performance in medical school has been exemplary. He was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society for his academic performance, and to the Gold Humanism Honor Society for his compassionate care, humanism and impact on the Worcester community. Nate has been a leader in the community, serving as Vice President of the UMass Chan student chapter of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons and Director of Finance for the Worcester Refugee Assistance Project. While in medical school, he spent an additional year doing gene therapy research on Tay-Sach’s Disease and other genetic disorders, work that resulted in four peer-reviewed manuscripts that have been published or are under review. He has won numerous awards, including the Global Health Scholar Award, the American Society of Gene Therapy Underrepresented Minority Abstract Award, the Martin Luther King Junior Semester of Service Student Award, the Mick Huppert Community Health Scholar Award and the Chancellor’s Scholarship. Nate is also an avid cyclist and a musician, playing the cello in the Seven Hills Symphony Orchestra. After a rigorous evaluation process by our faculty and residents, he was ranked among the top 1% of the hundreds of applicants who applied to the UMass Residency Program in Neurological Surgery this year. Please join us in welcoming Nate to UMass Neurological Surgery.

A Letter from the Department Chair

Mark D. Johnson, MD, PhD

The Department of Neurological Surgery at UMass Memorial Healthcare and the University of Massachusetts Medical School was formed in 2012 after being a division of the Department of Surgery for several decades. Since its inception, the Department has provided cutting-edge neurosurgical care for patients from Central Massachusetts and from around the world. As the Maroun Semaan Professor in Neurosurgery and the first Chair of the UMass Department of Neurological Surgery, I am excited to be a part of the ground breaking effort to transform neurosurgical care in New England.

The UMass Department of Neurological Surgery is working to provide the most advanced care available, with 7 neurosurgeons who are experts in treating a wide range of neurological disorders, including brain tumors, pituitary tumors, spine disorders, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, tremor, normal pressure hydrocephalus, spasticity, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury. In addition, our Department is dedicated to educating physicians-in-training who will become the neurosurgeons of tomorrow. Our neurosurgeons participate in a host of research activities designed to produce new discoveries and the treatments of tomorrow.

As Chair of the UMass Department of Neurological Surgery, I am committed to supporting our talented faculty as they work to deliver the highest quality and most advanced neurosurgical care available. This is our charge and our enduring commitment to you.
