Such an important reminder. At UMass Memorial, we see firsthand how early awareness, education, and community engagement can change lives. πŸ’šπŸ’™

October is both National Liver Awareness Month and Liver Cancer Awareness Month, and American Liver Foundation is here to support the 100 million Americans living with liver disease.

Throughout the month, we encourage everyone to take our quick quiz to check their risk for liver disease and liver cancer, try recipes from our 30-day liver-healthy meal plan, advocate virtually on Capitol Hill for liver health initiatives, and participate in free ALF educational + community events.

Let’s raise awareness, take action, and fight liver disease together. πŸ’šπŸ’™

πŸŒπŸ’™πŸ€Today, on World Gratitude Day, our UMass Memorial Transplant Team joins our patients, recipients, donor families, and caregivers in honoring the extraordinary gift of life.

We are deeply grateful for the courage of donor families, the resilience of our patients, the dedication of caregivers, and the strength of our recipients who remind us every day of the power of hope. We also want to share gratitude to our dedicated transplant team, whose compassion and commitment make second chances possible.

Thank you for being part of this journey with usβ€”for your generosity, compassion, and trust. Together, we continue to make second chances possible.πŸ’™πŸ€

πŸ’šπŸ’™ A huge thank you to the 22 team and family members who joined our UMass Transplant Organ-izers at this year’s Blue & Green Walk/5K at Polar Park!

This event is always fun, but more importantly, it’s a humbling reminder of why we do what we do. None of our work at UMass would be possible without the generosity of organ donors and their families. πŸ’šπŸ’™

We’re already excited to start planning for 2026β€”hope to see even more of you there! πŸ™Œ

πŸŒŸπŸ’™ Transplant Myth Busters: What to Do While You’re Waiting πŸ’šπŸŒŸ

Myth #1: β€œI can’t do anything while I’m waiting for my transplant.”
πŸ’‘ Truth: There’s actually a lot you can do to stay healthy and ready! Keep in contact with your coordinator and make sure you update us on ANY changes with where you live, support persons, insurances and medical changes.

Myth #2: β€œExercise isn’t safe for me right now.”
πŸ’‘ Truth: Gentle activity like walking or stretching (with your doctor’s okay) can keep your body strong and help with recovery later.

Myth #3: β€œMy diet doesn’t really matter until after transplant.”
πŸ’‘ Truth: Eating a balanced, kidney or liver friendly diet now helps you feel better and keeps you in the best shape for surgery.

Myth #4: β€œIt’s no big deal if I miss a check-up or lab.”
πŸ’‘ Truth: Staying on top of appointments and labs is key to staying active on the list and ready for that important phone call.

πŸ’šπŸ’™ While waiting can feel hard, remember, you are an important part of your own transplant journey. Every step you take now helps you heal stronger and faster later.

Last week, our UMass transplant team traveled to Maine to connect with local doctors and share how we care for patients with complex liver and bile duct diseases.

We talked about a special case where we successfully performed a liver transplant for a patient with a rare type of bile duct cancer called perihilar cholangiocarcinoma which is a procedure that only a few centers in the country offer.

Our team is passionate about bringing the latest, most advanced care to patients facing cancer all across New England. πŸ’™πŸ€

πŸ§ΊπŸ’š πŸ’™Happy National Picnic Table Day from UMass Transplant! πŸ’™πŸ€

Just like a picnic table brings everyone together for good food and great company, organ transplant brings people together for something even more meaningful β€” a second chance at life.

Our UMass Memorial transplant team works side-by-side like family at a picnic: surgeons, physicians, nurses, coordinators, social workers, and more β€” all coming together at one table to support our patients through their transplant journey. 🩺πŸ₯—πŸ«ΆπŸ½

Here’s to full hearts, full plates, and the amazing people who make transplants possible every day. ❀️

❓Did You Know❓
At UMass Memorial, our liver transplant team is always working to help more people feel better and live longer. πŸ’™πŸ€

Here are a few special things we do:

πŸ‘₯ Team of Experts for Liver Cancer
If someone has liver cancer, our liver tumor board, is a group of doctors from different specialties who all talk together to make the best plan for each patient.

βš™οΈ New Technology to Help More People
We use a special liver pump (called perfusion) to keep donated livers healthy and working before transplant. This helps us save more lives.

🍷 Support for Recovery
If your liver has been affected by alcohol, we’re here to help β€” without judgment. Our special clinic supports patients recovering from alcohol use disorder with care from doctors, counselors, and social workers. We work together to help you stay healthy, stay sober, and get ready for transplant when the time is right.

We’re here for you, with care, kindness, and the latest science.
