Last week, our UMass transplant team traveled to Maine to connect with local doctors and share how we care for patients with complex liver and bile duct diseases.

We talked about a special case where we successfully performed a liver transplant for a patient with a rare type of bile duct cancer called perihilar cholangiocarcinoma which is a procedure that only a few centers in the country offer.

Our team is passionate about bringing the latest, most advanced care to patients facing cancer all across New England. 💙🤍

At UMass Memorial, our liver transplant team is always working to help more people feel better and live longer. 💙🤍

Here are a few special things we do:

👥 Team of Experts for Liver Cancer
If someone has liver cancer, our liver tumor board, is a group of doctors from different specialties who all talk together to make the best plan for each patient.

⚙️ New Technology to Help More People
We use a special liver pump (called perfusion) to keep donated livers healthy and working before transplant. This helps us save more lives.

🍷 Support for Recovery
If your liver has been affected by alcohol, we’re here to help — without judgment. Our special clinic supports patients recovering from alcohol use disorder with care from doctors, counselors, and social workers. We work together to help you stay healthy, stay sober, and get ready for transplant when the time is right.

We’re here for you, with care, kindness, and the latest science.

Today we’re celebrating National Sunglasses Day—and taking a moment to highlight an important reminder for our transplant community.

💡 Why? Post-transplant medications can increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, making proper sun care crucial to prevent skin damage or even skin cancer.

✅ Protect your skin:
🌞 Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)
🧢 Grab a wide-brimmed hat
👕 Cover up with sun-protective clothing
🕶️ And of course, wear those stylish UV-blocking sunglasses!

🧠💥 Transplant Myth Busters! 💥🧠

There’s a lot of confusion out there about organ donation and transplantation. Let’s clear things up!

👇 Here are 4 common myths and the real facts you should know:

🔴 MYTH 1: “I’m too old to be an organ donor.”
✅ FACT: There’s no age limit to organ donation. Doctors determine what organs can be used based on health, not age.

🔴 MYTH 2: “I can’t be a donor because I have a medical condition.”
✅ FACT: Many health conditions don’t prevent you from being a donor. Let transplant professionals decide — you might save a life!

🔴 MYTH 3: “If doctors know I’m a donor, they won’t try as hard to save me.”
✅ FACT: Your life always comes first. The medical team saving your life is completely separate from the transplant team.

🔴 MYTH 4: “Only deceased people can donate organs.”
✅ FACT: You can donate a kidney or part of your liver while you’re alive — and change someone’s life today!
