Red light therapy has many potential benefits such as improved skin, wound healing, tissue repair, improved muscle recovery times, and reduced inflammation.
So how does red light therapy help with inflammation?
Inflammation is a normal part of the body’s immune response and helps the body respond to and heal from injury.
Viruses, bacteria, toxins, or injury activate your immune system and inflammatory cells. This acute inflammation is a good thing as it helps the body heal.
Some inflammatory diseases and lifestyle factors lead to chronic inflammation that may cause pain, discomfort, and further health problems.
Some causes of chronic inflammation include unhealed injury, repeated injury, chronic infection, autoimmune disease, drinking alcohol in excess, smoking, and chronic stress.
Red light therapy is a type of light therapy that uses specific wavelengths of light in the red and infrared spectrum. These wavelengths of light are absorbed by a chemical found in the mitochondria called cytochrome c oxidase.
Why do we want to support mitochondria?
Mitochondria are tiny organelles in the cell that help produce energy, play a role in cell health, and inflammatory responses. Mitochondrial dysfunction may increase inflammatory responses. So, red light therapy by improving mitochondria function may reduce inflammatory signaling and help reduce overall inflammation in the body.
