In honor of MA Recognition Week, today we’re continuing our spotlight series with Melissa Davis!

Melissa Davis has been making a difference for nearly 14 years — and for the past six, she’s been doing so at Family Health Center of Worcester. Her journey into the field began with a simple but powerful motivation: “I wanted to be able to help people and make a difference.” That desire has guided every step of her career.

At FHCW, Melissa finds fulfillment in the meaningful connections she builds with patients and the variety of experiences her role offers. She’s proud to be part of a team that puts care and compassion at the center of everything.

One moment that stands out in her memory speaks volumes about her approach to care. Early in her time at FHCW, Melissa encountered a patient who had previously had a negative experience. By listening closely and treating her with respect, Melissa helped turn the encounter into a healing one. “She hugged me and thanked me,” Melissa recalls — a moment that reaffirmed her purpose and the power of thoughtful care.

If she had to sum up her career in one word, it would be “fulfilling.” And the greatest lesson she’s learned? “How to be more understanding and to show more compassion.” These values are at the heart of her work and the reason she continues to make a lasting impact.

Thank you, Melissa, for your dedication, empathy, and the difference you make every day. We’re proud to celebrate you during Medical Assistant Recognition Week!

It’s Medical Assistant Recognition Week, and this week, Family Health Center of Worcester is proud to spotlight some of the incredible Medical Assistants who make our mission possible. Each day, we’ll be sharing the story of one of our dedicated MAs—each of whom volunteered to be featured—celebrating their impact, their journey, and the heart they bring to our care teams.

Michael Braun’s journey to becoming a Medical Assistant is one of courage, compassion, and second chances. After caring for his wife through a difficult post-surgical recovery, Michael found himself at a career crossroads. In his 50s, he made the bold decision to return to school, earning his associate’s degree and stepping into the world of health care with purpose.

Now with over a decade of experience as an MA — six and a half of those years at Family Health Center of Worcester — Michael works in Office-Based Addiction Treatment, where he witnesses transformation daily. “Occasionally we see patients start treatment and within a few months the spark of life comes back into their eyes,” he shares. “The difference is nothing short of miraculous.”

One moment that stands out for Michael is when he supported a patient who was at death’s door. “I felt like I was her cheerleader,” he recalls. “She wasn’t in this fight alone.” That spirit of encouragement is at the heart of his work, and the word he uses to describe his career: Encouraging.

Michael’s personal experience overcoming substance abuse gives him a unique ability to connect with and advocate for his patients. “I know just how hard and overwhelming it can be,” he says. His advice to others in health care? “Listen to your patients. Navigating the healthcare system can be overwhelming. A little compassion can go a long way.”

Thank you, Michael, for your empathy, your resilience, and your unwavering support of our community.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM), a reminder that vaccines play a vital role in protecting health at every stage of life. Staying up to date with recommended vaccines helps reduce the risk of serious illness and provides protection not only for ourselves but for those around us.

For individuals who are pregnant, vaccines are especially important. The flu shot is safe during any trimester and helps protect both the mother and baby from serious flu-related complications. Getting vaccinated during pregnancy also provides newborns with important early immunity.

Have questions or want to schedule your flu shot? Call Family Health Center of Worcester at (508) 860-7700.

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM)—a reminder that vaccines protect our health at every age. Staying up to date with recommended immunizations helps reduce risks from serious diseases and supports long-term wellness.

For older adults, vaccines are especially important as the immune system naturally weakens with age. One critical protection is the shingles vaccine, which helps prevent painful complications from a virus that most adults have carried since childhood.

Have questions about vaccines for yourself or a loved one? Call Family Health Center of Worcester at (508) 860-7700 to learn more or schedule an appointment.
