Thanks to everyone who participated in or supported Team Walkie Talkies at the American Heart Association Stroke Walk on June 7. We raised an incredible $1,331.44!

It was inspiring to see students, their families, clinical instructors, friends, and even one of our amazing clients and her extended family walking together in support of stroke awareness and recovery.

Here’s to next year’s walk being even bigger and better!

⭐️A big shoutout to our Graduate Assistants!⭐️
Chloe Toomey and Hailey Johnson (SLHS Department GAs) Thank you for your hard work maintaining and growing our social media presence, informing students of what our department is all about through our department bulletin boards, tutoring both undergraduate and graduate students in our programs, and helping the department run smoothly over this past year. You two make a great team!

Samantha Kelleher (SLHC GA)Thank you for your hardwork behind the scenes maintaining the inner workings of our on campus clinic. You raised awareness of what our clinic is all about and coordinated countless fairs on campus. From orchestrating the clinic bulletin board, to building an inclusive and inviting space in our graduate student work room in the clinic, you have excelled!

May is National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, a time to recognize the critical importance of communication and hearing in everyday life. Speech-language pathologists and audiologists play essential roles in diagnosing, treating, and supporting individuals with speech, language, hearing, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders. At WSU, we are proud to educate future clinicians who will advance communication access, promote hearing health, and improve quality of life across the lifespan. This month, we honor these professions and reaffirm our commitment to evidence-based practice, advocacy, and service!

🚨WSU SLH CLINIC HIGHLIGHT: Dysphagia Specialty Clinic  – CHD Disability and Elder Services🚨
Offered through CHD Disability and Elder Services at the Hawthorn Adult Day Center in Springfield (https://chd.org), this advanced clinical practicum provides experience in swallowing and swallowing disorders for graduate-level students in speech-language pathology.

This rotation emphasizes the practical application of foundational knowledge in the assessment, treatment, and management of dysphagia in medically complex individuals within a community-based setting. Students engage in comprehensive clinical evaluations and implement evidence-based treatment approaches guided by best practice standards.

The experience also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, with opportunities to work alongside professionals in occupational therapy, physical therapy, nursing, direct care services, and family caregivers. Through this integrated model, students refine their clinical reasoning, communication, and collaborative care skills essential for effective dysphagia management in diverse adult populations.

Huge thanks to all the amazing student volunteers and wonderful clients who made WSU SLHC’s first Aphasia Book Club a success! We met three times over the course of the semester and dove into “The Thursday Murder Club” by Richard Osman. The use of “reading ramps,” visual supports, and thoughtful, aphasia-friendly discussions were led by our clinical instructor, Jaime Marino. This club has been a dream of Jaime’s—and it came to life beautifully! We’re already excited for the next one… any book suggestions? Drop them below!
