Meet Gabriel Addow, a Patient Care Technician for our Clinical Support Staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

"I've always felt drawn to aiding others in their most vulnerable moments. Every day, I have the chance to make a significant impact on the lives of patients and their families, whether by delivering comfort, resolving problems, or providing support at tough times. The mix of science, compassion, and cooperation inspired me to pursue this path.

My favorite aspect of my profession is developing relationships with patients and colleagues. I enjoy being a member of a team that works together to achieve a common goal: giving the best possible care. It is extremely fulfilling to see a patient improve or simply know that I contributed to making their experience slightly better.

One of the most unforgettable experiences of my career was caring for a patient who endured great hurdles but eventually reached a positive outcome. Being a part of that journey and seeing the strength of the patient, their family, and our care team reminded me why I selected this profession.

UMass Memorial Health's dedication to its caregivers and patients is one of the reasons I enjoy my job there. It really stands out for its innovative, collaborative, and community-focused culture. Being a member of a company that places a strong priority on providing compassionate, high-quality care makes me feel encouraged, appreciated, and proud.

When I'm not working, I can often be seen hanging out with loved ones, going on outdoor adventures, getting active, or watching a nice movie or book while I'm not working."

Gabriel, thank you for being such an inspiration, and for showing our patients deep compassion through their journeys.

"We would like to recognize Maggie Cabral and Tara Minucci for their exceptional dedication, leadership, and commitment to both patients and staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center.

Maggie and Tara identified a critical gap in resources and support on our unit during a period when we were without a nurse educator. Rather than allowing this gap to persist, they took it upon themselves to secure a grant to fund much-needed educational opportunities for our staff. Their initiative went above and beyond expectations and exemplified the UMass Standards of Respect and CARES values.

With the funding, Maggie and Tara developed and delivered a comprehensive educational program focused on the care of advanced heart failure patients, particularly the management of pulmonary artery catheters. They created a hands-on simulation lab class, prepared an educational PowerPoint, and even provided badge cards with quick-reference clinical data to support safe, effective practice at the bedside. Multiple sessions were offered to ensure all staff had access to this critical training.

Their efforts not only strengthened the knowledge and confidence of the Lakeside Stepdown nursing staff but also fostered a culture of safety that directly impacts the quality of care our patients receive. Thanks to their initiative, patients benefit from safer, more consistent care, and nurses feel empowered and supported in their practice.

Maggie and Tara are true role models of collaboration and teamwork. They consistently demonstrate their investment to the heart failure program by supporting nursing staff in managing complex patients, stepping up to fill a gap without being asked, and strengthening the care we provide to a vulnerable and diverse patient population.

For these reasons, we are honored to recognize Maggie Cabral and Tara Minucci for all their dedication during Heart Month. Their care for patients and collaboration with our stepdown staff truly exemplify what it means to be exceptional cardiology providers."

- Words shared by the Lakeside Stepdown Unit Nursing Staff
