The codes on fruit stickers, called PLU (Price Look-Up) codes, indicate how the produce was grown and help identify organic, conventional, or genetically modified items. Here’s what they mean:
• A 4-digit PLU code starting with 3 or 4 means the produce is conventionally grown using traditional farming methods with synthetic fertilizers and pesticides (e.g., 4011 for a standard banana).
• A 5-digit PLU code starting with 9 signifies that the produce is organically grown without synthetic chemicals and meets USDA organic standards (e.g., 94011 for organic bananas).
• A 5-digit PLU code starting with 8 would indicate genetically modified produce, but these codes are rarely used by stores anymore (e.g., 84011 for a GMO banana is uncommon).
For heirloom or specialty varieties, the regular PLU codes are assigned similarly alongside their organic or conventional prefixes but are usually identified by specific code numbers for the type or variety (like heirloom tomatoes with their own unique codes).
So, the prefix and the length of the PLU code are key indicators: 4 digits for conventional, 5 digits starting with 9 for organic, and 5 digits starting with 8 for GMO (rarely used).[kqed +4]

Ghost, the beloved giant Pacific octopus at the Aquarium of the Pacific, is going viral and receiving an outpouring of love from people around the world. She is in senescence, the final phase of her life. 💔

A brilliant, complex animal and mother is sacrificing her own life to protect eggs that are unfertilized and will never hatch. Giant Pacific octopuses live alone, only meeting briefly to reproduce. Octopuses are known to be highly intelligent. They feel pain, stress, and fear, and they care for their unhatched babies until the end, yet they are still captured, confined, and consumed around the globe. The world mourns Ghost while simultaneously ignoring the suffering of other octopuses.
