Black History Month - In the mid-20th century, the YMCA trained masseurs, called health service operators, for local YMCA facilities. This photo from the YMCA archives shows a racially integrated training program for masseurs, most likely from the late 1950s or early 1960s. Official YMCA policy had called for an end to segregation at YMCA facilities in 1946, however, it took decades for that policy to become a reality throughout the U.S.

As we shift from summer to fall, it’s common to notice an increase in allergies and other lung-related issues during this period. In Chinese Medicine, each season corresponds to specific climatic factors that impact the associated organs.

For instance, summer is linked with heat and the Heart; thus, insomnia related to heat disturbing the Heart is not unusual. In contrast, fall is characterized by dryness, affecting the Lungs, which can lead to allergies or sinus issues that tend to present as dry.

As the seasons transition, along with their respective organs and climate influences, there are periods that blend one season into another, resulting in a mix of potential ailments during these times. While fall is primarily associated with dryness, it’s also possible to experience some residual heat from summer.

On an emotional level, fall is tied to grief in Chinese Medicine. Yin organs are usually connected with specific emotions, seasons, colors, tastes, and more. With the Lungs linked to fall, its paired emotion is grief, along with the color white and a pungent flavor. It’s not unusual for feelings of grief to emerge during this time, as the Lungs, through the act of breathing, help us process and release old emotions.
