Seven of our incredible team members - Monique Bogaert, RN, Virginia Mayer, RN, MSN, Ruslana Lee, ultrasound tech, Dr. Marlene Roth, Destiny Roberts, RN, Neisha Moon, RN, and Cindy Trimble, RN - traveled over 7,000 miles to Migori, Kenya, to provide medical care to those in need through the Kenya Relief program.

During the two-week medical mission, the team performed 46 surgeries and cared for countless others who live without basic access to healthcare, as well as visited local schools and villages to donate food, books, toys, bedding and other essentials. One of the families they supported was a grandmother raising 9 grandchildren after losing both of her daughters.

This marked the 9th mission trip for Virginia Mayer, who shared, "My missions to Kenya refill my soul. I am so lucky to use my skills and education to help such wonderful people. I continue to return because I enjoy helping children who come to us sick and turn them into happy, healthy, laughing kids."

We’re proud of our team’s commitment to expanding access to care no matter how far it takes them. 🌍

“I shouldn’t have been waking up with joint pain at 19 years old,” says Ravyn, who at her highest weight was 326 pounds. Despite living an active childhood – Ravyn participated in basketball, track, dance and marching band – she was always overweight. When Ravyn learned she was prediabetic, she decided to enroll in our weight management program to make lasting changes for her health.

Under the guidance of our bariatric surgeon Dr. Puraj Patel, Ravyn adopted healthy lifestyle habits. She also learned about bariatric surgery and ultimately decided it was right for her. “It was something I needed to do to prolong my life,” she says.

At 20 years old, Ravyn had what’s called a robotic sleeve gastrectomy. During this procedure, a small pouch is created to decrease the amount of food the stomach can hold. She recovered well – but now the real work was about to start.

“Bariatric surgery is by no means the easy way out,” says Ravyn. “There is a lot of prep work prior to surgery, and once you have surgery, your eating habits change immediately. You have a higher chance of vitamin deficiencies and have to adjust to how quickly your body begins changing.”

But Ravyn was up for the challenge – and lost more than 150 pounds. She also still participates in the weight management program to hold herself accountable.

“I have to be mindful to keep snacks on me and ensure I am eating small meals when I can,” says Ravyn, who is now a busy, 25-year-old nursing student. “I am so glad I stuck with the program. The team has been nothing but supportive and available to me whenever I need them.”

“It felt like half my world was muted,” says Ronald Maynor, whose life changed after an infection in his right ear led to near total hearing loss.

He struggled to participate in meetings at work. Even simple joys like attending a comedy show with his family became isolating.

It was a cochlear implant that finally restored his hearing – a surgically implanted device that transforms sound into electrical signals to stimulate the hearing nerve.

Ronald’s audiologist referred him to our otolaryngologist Dr. Kristen Angster to learn more about the procedure. She explained how it could take 12 to 18 months for his brain to adapt but that it can be life changing.

Ronald’s cochlear implant was officially turned on several weeks after surgery. “I could hear something right away,” he says. “The sounds were tinny and strange but I could make out words. It was emotional. I was hearing through that ear for the first time in 10 years and it was amazing. I cried.”

He was encouraged to listen to podcasts and audiobooks through his cochlear implant to help his brain adapt to the new way of processing sound. “I stuck with it and my hearing got better and better,” Ronald says. “My audiologist even said my progress was off the charts.”

Now Ronald can follow conversations without turning his head. He can watch shows and attend concerts while hearing every word. He can run with friends – he is an avid runner – and understand what they’re saying.

“I tell people that Henry Ford gave me back half my world,” Ronald says. “They truly changed my life. Thanks to my team, I’m part of the conversation again.”
