Dr. Armstrong here.

As someone personally diagnosed with ADHD and a father of young children, I can certainly relate to all the concerns out there about ADHD medication.

Yet, the research is abundantly clear:

1) ADHD medication prescribed appropriately is a relatively safe treatment option compared to most other mental health medications,

2) ADHD medication actually DECREASES one’s risk for substance abuse and,

3) ADHD medication is by far the most effective treatment…

…WHEN YOU HAVE AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS AND THE RIGHT MEDICATION AND DOSAGE.

Unfortunately, getting an accurate ADHD diagnosis often requires a comprehensive evaluation because the check lists commonly given at pediatrician and family physician offices simply cannot rule-out the myriad of medical and psychological problems that can mimic or exacerbate ADHD.

Yet even with an accurate diagnosis, ADHD medication isn’t a one size fits all and often requires careful selection of the right medication and dosage in order to decrease the risk of side effects and maximize effectiveness.

Here at Integra Psychological Services, we believe neuropsychological testing is the most comprehensive way to arrive at an accurate diagnosis of ADHD and provide the safest and most effective treatment plan (in addition to discovering and highlighting our ADHD patient’s neurocognitive strengths). We collaborate closely with prescribers to ensure our patients with ADHD are prescribed the right medication.

If you or someone you know is wondering about the possibility of having ADHD and want the most research-based, comprehensive ADHD evaluation, please call us to schedule an appointment. Let our compassionate, expert clinicians show you our passion for ADHD with our therapeutic testing process.

Here at Integra, we are in the business of empowering brains…

…even those who struggled to concentrate long enough to read this lengthy Facebook post.

Kids, teens, and college students with ADHD almost always benefit from accommodations. Here is an excellent article outlining some of the legal requirements (504, IEP, IDEA, etc.) for public schools providing education for students with ADHD:

Do you know what special education services a child with ADHD is entitled to? Who must evaluate the child? When the school can refuse to comply with a 504 Plan or IEP laws? If not, read this.

Happy New Year!

At Integra, our passion is to increase access to and de-stigmatize mental disorders and treatment for children, adolescents, adults, and older adults.

For whatever reason, our culture has made it "okay" to easily share with others about our medical illnesses (e.g., high blood pressure), but has taught us to shamefully hide our mental health challenges. Why is the brain treated differently than the heart?

Let's change this. Let's declare the 2020's to be the decade of healing for those with mental illness!

If you or someone you love is struggling with any brain-related challenges, cognitive difficulties, or mental health symptoms, please call us for assistance (non-emergencies only). If for some reason we can't help, we will personally and compassionately find you someone who can.

Dr. Armstrong here. I have ADHD, which is why I’m passionate about its comprehensive evaluation and treatment.

For a little fun, I thought I’d share some of my dad-joke quality, personal ADHD symptoms and thoughts:

1. I believe “Holiday Blow Out Sales / Last Minute Deals” are cleverly designed to make those of us with ADHD feel a little less ashamed of our procrastination.

2. My ADHD brain is like driving / trying to navigate around DFW airport (with all that construction) while using a GPS set on max volume while also “graciously” accepting my spouse’s verbal directions which are “lovingly” mixed with her occasionally singing the wrong words of my favorite song that is playing on the radio...also at max volume, which has just woken the kids in the backseat who are now arguing.

3. If you ever wondered what it’s like to have ADHD, just imagine being “hangry”.....except all day, everyday. My favorite song by country singer Tim McGraw is: “I don’t know why you’ve gotta be hangry all the time”

4. Procrastination is actually an accomplishment because it means I actually remembered to do something.

5. Compensating for ADHD-related memory problems requires using environmental prompts and reminders. But that doesn’t include waiting to pay your electricity bill until the lights go out during dinner with the in-laws.

6. ADHD is the reason I have 5 (or possibly 6) copies of my driver’s license.

7. Having ADHD in social situations is like being the last person to enter a crowded elevator but awkwardly standing with your back toward the elevator doors.

8. I have proudly arrived early for several important work meetings...but on the wrong day.

9. Thanks to ADHD, I have more than once called someone and became startled by the sound of their voice saying “hello? Hellooooo!?” ...because I had forgotten THAT I had called them while the phone was ringing.

10. I don’t have trouble starting tasks. But sometimes I find it difficult fini

Merry Christmas from our family to yours!
