What does it mean to be an Urban Missionary?
First of all, it means being CALLED to an area by the Most High God — an assignment from the King that is on HIS heart — not a whim or a selfish desire. ✅
It means being alert, aware, and attuned to the spiritual heartbeat of the city/area you’re called to, knowing the spiritual dynamics and opposition to the gospel that exists there. ✅
It means hours and hours walking city streets, praying and worshipping our Jesus, and asking Abba for revival to come. ✅
It means being available to have uncomfortable conversations with those who dismiss and/or despise Christianity, and with those who have grave doubts about the truth of God being real. ✅
It means opening your heart and even your home to the hurting and the hopeless, to the self-medicated and the self-centered, to the angry and abused. ✅
It means hosting “healing nights” for any who will come, teaching them about emotions, releasing stored trauma, showing them they are loved and important to their Creator. ✅
It means transporting lost boys to the hospital and praying with them as they wept over the senseless shooting death of their friend. ✅
It means running back and forth between gang members, saying “this is not a day to die” until they slowly backed up and left the scene (Mark). ✅
It means being a target of the forces of darkness that have enjoyed unopposed freedom to keep people deceived, and it means your family are targets as well. ✅
This is NOT an easy assignment. This is NOT a vacation. This is NOT easy ground to plow. When you think of foreign missionaries, do you ever think “that sounds like so much fun!?” Do you think “they should get a job to support themselves while ministering to those people over there!?”
It stuns me that people will give to foreign missions, political parties, animal shelters, and other groups, while completely ignoring the needs of those who are willing to lay down their lives for others HERE. The ones we KNOW personally (or at least know their character, their faith, their gifts, their calling.)
I asked the Father, “Why is that?? Why don’t people see the need to financially support someone like Jen, or others who do similar kingdom work??” HIs reply was “they don’t believe their small portion will make a difference — they believe it takes a large amount, and they just don’t have it to give.”
And I get that — especially in this economy. But friends, do you realize that if only 300 (10%) of people from among the 3,000 that follow Jen Weir’s page committed to giving just $25 a month toward support of her mission to the North East - greater Boston area, that it would amount to $7500 a month??? And trust me, that is NOT luxury living — it actually takes that much, as this is the most expensive area to live in the U.S. And while one-time gifts are appreciated more than you know, landlords look at monthly income to determine if they will rent to you. And Jen DOES work — she has a business, she writes, she creates materials and studies and courses that many have benefitted from. But it’s just not enough. Not for this area.
So I’m asking those who have followed Jen, who have received from her bold words of faith, who have seen the fire that burns in her for this area she’s called to — will YOU be one of the 300?? For less than a dinner out? Or a couple of Starbucks visits? Will you partner with our God and His daughter to impact one of the most significant strongholds in our nation?
Will you click the link and be part of the 300?
