When Jesse was diagnosed with autism David and I knew that we wanted to use our story and our journey to help spread awareness and knowledge throughout our community and family. We just never really knew how we were going to do it.

Going through this we’ve had really great support and even better resources, but with our careers in law enforcement we’ve realized that this is not the case for every family out there.

And let’s be honest those who have never had a loved one with autism, experienced episodes or interactions with individuals on the spectrum may not be educated on how to interact or help de-escalate behavioral outbursts.

Officers on a daily basis answer calls, make traffic stops, and respond to major life changing events where they come in contact with individuals on the spectrum and we want to help make those interactions easier for those who have sensory issues and the officers responding by educating officers on how to do so.

With that being said David and I have decided to start a nonprofit organization called Shielding The Spectrum. To kick start this project we will be hosting a fundraising event to raise money or donations for Patrol Sensory Go Bags. These bags will be donated to local police agencies to go inside patrol units for officers to assist in engaging and helping those with sensory issues on calls.

This will be an annual event and just the start of truly amazing organization to spread awareness and education.

At the event we will have a donation drop off for sensory fidgets, bags, and items used for stimulation. You will also be able to purchase raffle tickets for door prizes.
All money donated or raised through the raffles will go into building these Patrol Sensory Go Bags.

Please help us be the voice and advocate for those who can’t!

Repetitive movements or sounds (often called “stimming”) can help regulate emotions or sensory input.

It’s not something to “fix” — it’s something to understand.

Sounds, lights, textures, things we may not notice can feel overwhelming.

Understanding sensory needs helps us create more supportive environments.
