The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential We educate parents in the treatment, physical and social wellness of special needs and well children
(371)

Historically, children diagnosed with developmental delay, cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, attention deficit disorder, hyperactivity, learning problems, dyslexia, and a host of other symptomatic diagnoses have been considered hopeless. Thousands of parents have come to The Institutes to learn how to help their children at home. Those parents have proven beyond any doubt that brain-injured children are not hopeless, but instead have tremendous potential. The Institutes exists to insure that all brain-injured children have a fighting chance to be well. The objective of The Institutes is to take brain-injured children, however severely hurt, and help them to achieve normality physically, intellectually, physiologically, and socially. The majority of children achieve one of these goals, and many children achieve two of these goals. Some children achieve all of these goals, and some children achieve none of these goals. The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential serves children from all over the world. The international headquarters is located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Qualified branches of The Institutes are the European Institute in Fauglia, Italy, and The Doman Kenkyusho in Tokyo and Kobe, Japan. The Institutes have offices in Aguascalientes, Mexico, and Madrid Spain. The Institutes presents courses for parents in Philadelphia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, Russia, and Australia.

Leonidas was born sixteen weeks prematurely by an emergency c-section. He three months in neonatal intensive care with respiratory support, undergoing cardiac surgery, and laser surgery for retinopathy of prematurity. As he recovered, his mother began early sensory stimulation with her little boy. At age 2, Leonidas was advanced in recognizing numbers and letters, but he was not yet speaking. He was able to walk but with poor depth perception. He was not yet running or able to use his hands together.

His mother read What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child and How to Teach Your Baby to Read and began an early reading program. Mother recalls Leonidas learned to read quickly. His speech began to develop at the same time. When Leonidas was 3 years old, his parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course. Leonidas had his first appointment at The Institutes just after his fourth birthday. He was understanding and speaking in both English and Spanish. He was reading library books in both languages as well. He was walking long distances and had begun to run. He was now able use both hands together and he liked to draw. At age 5, Leonidas had begun to write. A year later, Leonidas was well above his age level in reading and understanding. He could run 3 miles non-stop and was typing in paragraphs.

Today, Leonidas is thirteen years old. He is a triathlete, competing at the national level.
His mother writes: “In the last couple of years, Leonidas has become quite a top athlete, both in track & field (specializing in the 1.5K and 3K races) and triathlon. Leonidas is part of a track club year-round. He practices 3 times per week and competes on the weekend. Leonidas is excelling in his sports activities, and it's wonderful to watch him thrive.
His long-term memory is extraordinary, and he retains minutiae of information of anything that he is passionate about. He continues to have an enormous amount of happiness in him and a willingness to do well. All his teachers have commented on his good behavior, and he is in good health.”

Our next course starts on October 6th , 2025 – LIVE & ONLINE

Sometimes the very first question our parents ask is what makes us different?
There are so many ways to answer this question that it sometimes stops us in our tracks.
What does make us different?

Our course is different everyone says so and they are correct but why are they different?

We have been in the trenches nose-to-nose with children who ranged from comatose - on the edge of life and death, children who are blind and deaf and paralyzed, children who are hyperactive and disorganized, children whose development is slow, children with speech problems, behavior problems, reading problems, and learning problems. Babies who were premature and at risk, children with seizures, genetic problems, failure-to-thrive children, children who are sick more days than they are well. These are our children, and we have been fighting for them and helping them to get better every day for almost 70 years.

Course is presenting in English & Spanish

Mothers know intuitively that the first months of life are vital to the long-term well-being of their children. In this, they are absolutely correct, say authors Glenn and Janet Doman.

💁‍♀️But mothers and fathers do not have the information they need to use these first months to their baby's best advantage, or to make the first six years of life as stimulating and rewarding as they could and should be.
That's because until now, the world has had little understanding of the true potential of a newborn.

👶🏻How Smart Is Your Baby? provides parents with all the information they need to help their baby achieve his or her full potential. The authors first explain the newborn's growth and development, including all of the critical stages involved.

🧠They then guide the parents in creating a home environment that enhances and enriches brain development. A developmental profile, which parents complete, allows Mom and Dad to track the progress of their child, to determine the baby's strengths, and to recognize where additional stimulation and opportunity are needed.

📚Most important, parents learn how to design an effective and balanced daily program for physical and intellectual growthWhen parents understand how their child develops, they can become the best teachers their babies will ever have. Best of all, this joyous program brings parents and babies closer together, establishing a life-long bond of learning and love.🥰

Ana was born a healthy baby. She developed normally. Unfortunately, not long after her second birthday she fell head-first from a second story balcony onto a marble floor in a hotel lobby.

She was airlifted to the hospital where she remained comatose with two skull fractures. When she regained consciousness, she was unable to open her eyes, had difficulty speaking, and was paralyzed on the right side of her body. Once discharged from the hospital, her mother recalls “It was very sad to remember all the things that Ana had already been doing, as she could not do any of them, not even sitting up or eating by herself, she could not hold a spoon, she could not speak clearly.”

To help their little girl, parents found the book What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child. They began a home treatment program. A year later, Ana could walk but with poor coordination. Just before Ana’s 7th birthday, parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course, and had Ana evaluated at The Institutes for an Intensive Treatment Program designed by the Staff.

By eight years of age, Ana entered school full-time with her peers. She was above her age level in reading, and writing. She was fluent in both Spanish and English. Her right side was no longer rigid. Ana wrote: “I miss The Institutes. I am in second grade and an A plus student in every class. I am still running three miles a day in the evening and continue my enhanced nutrition program. I will never forget you and I do not want to be forgotten either.” At nine years of age, Ana graduated from The Institutes.

Last year, Ana graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law. She passed the California Bar Exam this year and was recently sworn into the Bar. She wrote “It really did feel like a full circle moment when I was told I passed the Bar. I would think back to myself as a 7-year-old and the difficult moments I faced while doing the home program, and it kept me going through the toughest times while studying for the Bar. I still have The Institutes journal where my story was printed, it’s a prized possession.”

👶The first year of life is vital to the well-being of the baby. Although learning continues throughout life, there is a special window of opportunity for brain growth and learning that occurs in the first twelve months of life.

🧠We now know that intellectual development starts at birth, if not earlier. This means that effective sensory stimulation is essential for the baby. We also know that mobility development starts in utero and must be permitted to continue from the instant of birth onward.

🚷Anything that physically stops or restricts the baby for any significant time decreases the precious opportunity to move.

📘Appropriate intellectual stimulation and mobility opportunity are the basis for language and manual development.

👶All babies have a right to move and explore. Babies are born moving, but too often the modern baby is bundled up, put upside down on his back, put in a baby seat or a backpack, and has no opportunity to crawl. This teaches the baby that movement is impossible.

🤸‍♀️Our parents learn how to start right at birth to create a great mobility environment so that the baby is crawling in no time, then creeping, and cruising the household to explore and discover.

👩‍💼Parents learn how to evaluate their baby through The Institutes Developmental Profile. This gives each parent a clear picture of where the baby’s development is on track and where it needs more stimulation and opportunity.

📊This program gives a detailed map of the first twelve months and carefully guides mother and father through each stage. Parents quickly see that development should not occur by accident but rather on purpose with a clear plan that works.

A Military Tribute at Arlington to Our Founder

Tribute to Glenn Doman made by Lieutenant General Eifler, Deputy chief of Staff, G1 head of human resources for the United States Army.

What a special day. I first need to recognize, the dignitaries who have joined us today:

From the British embassy representing the British government which recognized Lieutenant Colonel Doman with the Military Cross for his valiant actions.

From Luxembourg which awarded him the Croix de Guerre.

And the United States in recognition of his valor awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and both the Bronze and Silver Star.

We thank you for honoring his heroism today.

You know, the Battle of Bulge has a great history, but for those who went through it, it was hell on Earth. There were many casualties on both sides. There was a huge mass of resistance. But in the end, the Allies prevailed. And it was the last of the German offensive. For the rest of the war that was the big turning point.

And Lieutenant Colonel Doman was there. And I like myself an infantryman, it changed him. But I would tell you, and he would probably tell you; the war changed us for the better.

As part of the greatest generation, it was not just what he did in combat and by answering the nation’s call after Pearl Harbor. But probably even more so, as you all know, as most of you are part of his legacy is what he did when he came home, the lives of the 25,000 families that he personally impacted and the millions of people that he impacted with his books and with the organization that he created with his wife Katie.

That fine work continues today.

That's a great example for all of us, especially our veterans, who are war-scarred, war-torn and gone through hell on Earth to come back, as Eric mentioned, and have the resilience that he displayed to carry on and continue his mission on Earth for humanity. We are all better for it today.

Martin was born after a difficult delivery. He crawled and crept oddly and his walking was delayed. At age 30 months, Martin only had a few words of speech and was diagnosed as developmentally delayed. He began speech and occupational therapy. Seven years passed, when Martin was ten years old, Mother attended the What to Do About Your Brain-Injured Child course and wrote:

“When Martin started school, I noticed more of the differences with other children, not only academically but in motor coordination, too. Since then, he has always been behind other boys his age….I am concerned he may not have a life like other boys. His speech problems prevent him from being understood, and he is left without friends. Academically he might never be at his age level, or study for a career or develop a profession with passion. I’m worried that he would not live a full life, and that he will not achieve his dreams due to his limitations. Mostly I would like my son to be able to live a full, independent, and happy life.’’

At his first appointment he was 11 years old. After two months of program at home Mother notes “I find that he is more agile, with more energy, more coordination, he talks a lot more and has expanded his vocabulary and the complexity of his speech. His reasoning is deeper than I had imagined - not because he did not have it but because he was not able to express it until now. …I am amazed at his thirst for knowledge.”

Update on Martin Martin is now reading at his age level (50 words in 5 seconds)! His handwriting is neater and smaller, and he is choosing more sophisticated vocabulary when he writes. Martin has been fit and healthy. He now enjoys running very much, and his soccer game is improving. He is outgoing and friendly - he can communicate what he knows with everyone he meets.

What To Do About Your Brain-Injured Child
August 11th, 2025

Before the end of the course, our parents learn how to evaluate their child. Parents learn what a real diagnosis needs to be and why the symptomatic label their child was given is not a diagnosis.
Parents then learn how to create an effective home program to significantly improve mobility, intellectual growth, social growth, and health. It is a comprehensive program that parents can do at home.

Sara was diagnosed with spastic cerebral palsy shortly after her birth.
In the first two years of her life, she had difficulty sitting and could not move. Parents were told by specialists she would never improve.

Mother writes “We felt deep down in our hearts that we could do something for our daughter”.

When Sara was 10 years old, her parents attended the What to Do About Your Brain-injured Child course and said, “We understood that in the near future Sara’s life could be much better.” At age 12, Sara had her first appointment at The Institutes and shortly after she began crawling for the first time in her life. At 14, Sara began walking independently under an overhead ladder without help from anyone for the first time in her life.

Sara has since graduated from high school with excellent grades. She is a speed reader in four languages, at a university level. She is a poet, and an exceptional artist.

Update:

Sara has been in perfect health for 9 years. She can walk independently at home and is now swimming successfully. She has joined a local band and performs with them as the drummer. She is a great events planner; she organizes monthly concerts of her band and recently organized an event for a local charity. She has applied for a position in the library as she continues to be an avid reader.

Sara continues to paint, one of her paintings was featured in an artist’s magazine, selected among many competitors. She presented her sixth art exhibition last November in Tuscany near Florence. Her paintings are popular and to sell well. Sara is considering taking over for her fine arts instructor upon his retirement. Sara has many interests and is always finding new opportunities - she is unstoppable!

Sara comments: “The best thing about The Institutes program is seeing significant changes in my mobility and achieving important results in my social and intellectual life.”
