With the holidays fast approaching, we know this can be a challenging time of year especially for those struggling with an eating disorder or disordered eating. We asked our student intern, Jordan Clement, to share some helpful tips on how to get through the holidays in eating disorder recovery. Read the wonderful tips she has to share on our website. Wishing everyone a peaceful holiday season.

One of our therapists received this beautiful piece of art from a client and we immediately knew it needed to be a focal point of our space. This piece is one that elicited such strong emotions as we admired it and we want each person who comes into our space to feel welcomed home to their body when they view this.

A beautiful note from the artist, Paige Payne, on her artwork: “So this is a piece about connection, vulnerability, and appreciating your body. A sister piece to a painting I did about a year ago. Inspired by body image struggles, Kintsugi, and Venus of Willendorf, a famous statue. In this painting I wanted to include a large range of body types. I truly believe that seeing yourself or some semblance of your body type in artwork is SO powerful. Imagine if we grew up seeing that. I chose to make these figurines look like clay statues because I love the idea that we are constantly being molded and shaped by the things we experience. In each of the figurines you can see different shapes, stretch marks, folds, lumps, bumps. Each is unique and each is a beautiful work of art. All of these figurines are connected by Kintsugi (the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with golden lacquer. It treats breakage and repair as part of the history of an object, rather than something to disguise). If you look closely, you can see that one of the golden Kintsugi lines is continuous, and connects each figurine to the other. To me this symbolizes that although we live all over the world and have completely different lives, the things we go through and experience allow us to connect to each other. Because we have all been broken in various ways at various times, we can mourn with those that mourn and comfort those that need comfort.”

We know many people are mourning, feeling broken, and in need of comfort, especially during the holidays. We wish you all peace, comfort and connection as you navigate this holiday season and as always, we are grateful and honored to be part of your recovery journey.

One of our talented therapists created this piece of artwork as a gentle reminder that we change over time. Our bodies change in beautiful ways that diet culture often rejects. Sometimes this includes wrinkles, stretch marks, and weight fluctuations. In the same way we can change mentally; growing, adapting and building resilience to the hard seasons of life. Be kind to your body as it’s changing and be sure to seek support through those hard seasons. 💙

We are grateful for our clients who have entrusted us with their care and we are honored to be part of your recovery journey. We wish you a Happy Thanksgiving and want to remind you to take care of yourself all throughout the holiday season.
