So let’s chronicle someone having both knees replaced AT THE SAME TIME! And that someone?? Our very own Lori Cooper Ketterer!!
With any joint replacement success it starts BEFORE the surgery. Making sure you’ve check boxed several things:
1. Good muscle tone and having some cardiorespiratory fitness ✅
2. Finding the right joint replacement surgeon. Just because someone does a high volume of surgeries or your neighbor liked them or your friend who works in the operating room loves their personality doesn’t mean they have good outcomes. Youll spend hours researching your new car purchase…do the same with your surgeon choice. Talk to us, talk to other PTs and athletic trainers we see the outcomes✅
3. Have the right attitude. You may think you’re a “tough” person…until you have a knee replaced…I have seen this surgery break people I thought were mentally ready and strong. Remember it’s a marathon and not a sprint…good days and bad days. Be positive in the midst of despair. ✅
4. Get your support system in place. I have written about this before…it takes a village to have success in anything… get your villagers lined up. You’ll need rides to appointments, getting prescriptions, help with meals, someone to complain to, listen to, talk to, etc. ✅
5. Find a good PT… Lori Cooper Ketterer had no choice! 🤣🤣🤣 and just because your doctor has a financial interest in the PT office next door to them that they own doesn’t mean they have experienced clinicians who can deal with the very few but troubling complications that come up. Walk into a corporate owned PT office today and you could be seeing someone with 6 months or 10 years of experience. Are you working with the same PT every time you walk in? Ask these questions. As with your surgeon choice, do some research✅
So Lori was biking up until the day of her surgery, was doing pre-surgery exercises to strengthen her leg, we found the best surgeon to do both knees at the same time, mom Cooper came to stay with her and her family is waiting on her, of course the PT thing was ✅, and she knew what to expect. And because of working with me, shes a tough cookie. 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼This was her one day post op:
Bandaged up for a few days, swelling of thigh/knee/calf…all normal. Black and Blue of thigh/calf/even the foot all normal. Keys to the first day: ice/meds/try and allow the knee to bend and straighten as you can tolerate. No real exercise, be happy you’re up and taking nourishment. With having both knees replaced, you will most likely stay overnight. One sided replacements are being done on an outpatient basis in some areas. Expect the worst hope for the best!
So that’s the start…more follow up posts coming!
