Update:
As many of you know, a couple weeks ago (4/28), after months of hard work and preparation, we had a successful survey and received our state license โ the first step in obtaining Medicare certification.
Our mission has been the same from the day that we started this journey: to bring compassionate, high-quality hospice care to the rural communities we call home and to add a local, independent, nonprofit choice for our neighbors.
However, last week โ the very same day that we paid our fees and prepared our enrollment application to go out in the mail โ a new nationwide Medicare enrollment moratorium was implemented. We have been told that all applications submitted 5/13 or after will automatically be denied. The moratorium is currently slated to last six months and can be extended in six-month increments.
The moratorium was intended to address fraud concerns in other parts of the country, but this blanket halt does not distinguish between large corporate bad actors and small grassroots nonprofits like ours.
Here in Southwest Virginia, hospice care is already underutilized. For uninsured and underinsured patients and families, access to hospice care can also be especially challenging.
Our team is continuing to advocate, continuing to prepare, and continuing to fight for the patients and families who deserve compassionate end-of-life care close to home.
If you feel led to help, there are two ways you can make a difference right now:
๐ Use your voice.
If you share our concerns about how this moratorium may affect access to hospice care in rural communities, we encourage you to respectfully reach out to legislators and policymakers.
๐ Support our mission.
Because this delay affects our ability to begin bringing in revenue from Medicare, community support is now more important than ever as we continue covering the operational costs of building a nonprofit hospice from the ground up. If you, someone you know, or a company you know of is looking for a way to make a meaningful impact in the community, we invite you to reach out to us as we continue moving forward in serving members of our community at end-of-life.
Most of all, we ask for your prayers, encouragement, and continued belief in what we are building together.
Rural Roots. Uncompromising Care.
