What over-the-counter medications should you use for your child when they have a cold? 🤔
The truth is that the majority of the time, pediatricians do not recommend medications for cold symptoms.
Cold symptoms can include:• Runny nose 🤧• Congestion 😮💨• Cough 😷• Sometimes fever, fatigue, and malaise 🌡️
In most kids, it’s going to last somewhere from 3 to 7, sometimes up to 10 days, and is not associated with difficulty breathing or severe pain.
For these simple colds, we recommend supportive care:
• Humidifier or vaporizer 💨• Steam baths or steam showers 🚿• Nasal saline and nasal saline washes 💧• Honey (for children over 1 year old) 🍯• Vicks • Tylenol or ibuprofen as needed for fever, pain, or malaise 💊
Mainly, keep your child comfortable and know that it’s not going to last forever!
If symptoms are worsening, lasting more than 10 days, associated with difficulty breathing or severe pain—or if you’re not sure—it’s best to have your child evaluated by their doctor 👩⚕️
