Today is Emergency Nurses Day

When : Date varies: October 9, 2013, October 8, 2014, October 14, 2015

Emergency Nurses Day recognizes an important care giver. According to the Emergency Nurse's Association "Emergency Nurses Day salutes the dedication and commitment of emergency nursing professionals, who bring care, comfort, and compassion to patients......."

Emergency room nurses see it all. And, often it "ain't good". Yet, they return to work, knowing they make a difference to sick, injured and sometimes dying people that enter the ER each and every day.

Emergency Nurse's Day is held during Emergency Nurses Week.

Emergency Nurse everywhere, we hope you enjoy this day.

Origin of Emergency Nurses Day:
Although they did not say so, we believe the Emergency Nurse's Association most likely created this day. They certainly sponsor it.

There is some reference to this as an "International" day. It is also celebrated in Australia and Canada.

We found a few references to an Emergency Nurse's Day in May. It is unclear as to how a May date may have begun.

Today is Bald and Free Day

When : Always October 7th (or the 14th ???)

Bald and Free Day honors those of us with a beautiful, shiny top. You don't' have to be bald to celebrate this day. But, it helps. People who are married to, or related to a bald headed person can celebrate with the honoree.

Enough with the bald jokes. There will be zero tolerance for them today. Rather, today is a day to cherish and appreciate the freedom that comes with being bald. While the rest of us are spending money on hair cuts, hair shampoo, hair sprays, combs, and such, the bald guys is smiling as he saves money and time.

Upon becoming a lucky bald guy, you are finally freed of the worry and fret that other guys have as they wonder for years:

"Will I lose my hair?"
Is my hair turning grey?
Better still, as a bald guys are much happier. In addition to saving money on haircuts and hair accessories, they never had a "bad hair day".

So, if you are bald, enjoy your freedom, as you celebrate Bald and Free Day.

Today is World Smile Day

Date When Celebrated: The first Friday in October

World Smile Day celebrates the ever popular yellow smiley. It also offers us an opportunity to do an act of kindness. According to the World Smile Day website, a proclamation of this day was made by the U.S. Congress. Now that should put a smiley on your face.

The smiley face became so popular, that the U.S. Post Office issued a stamp with the smiley face.

The intent of World Smile Day is to do an act of kindness, or help one person to smile. Why not do both!?

The yellow smiley stands brightly smiling upon this day, offering it's stamp of approval.

About the Smiley Face:
Harvey Ball, a commercial artist from Worcester, Massachusetts created the smiley face in 1963. The State Mutual Life Assurance Company hired Harvey as a free lance artist to create a smiley face for use in improving company morale. From there, the bright and cheerful smiley grew in popularity. It's popularity grew slowly at first. Then, it exploded in the 1970's. Ultimately, the smiley became wildly popular.

There is some controversy over the smiley's creation. French entrepreneur named Franklin Loufrani claimed to have invented it in 1968. In 1971 he patented it in 80 countries.

Origin of World Smile Day:
Harvey Ball of Worcester Ma. created World Smile Day. Concerned about over commercialization of his smiley, he felt one day a year should be dedicated to smiling and doing acts of kindness.

The first World Smiley Day celebration was on October 1, 1999. It is unclear why the date of the celebration was moved.

Today is National Custodial Workers Recognition Day

When : Always October 2

National Custodial Workers Day is today. Give your custodial worker a big thanks. At your school, church, place of employment, and a variety of other places, your custodial support are silently at work all year long. They are the workers who clean and keep in good repair, the facility that you enjoy. They seldom get recognition. They are usually in the background or "behind" the scene.

Take a minute on this day, to seek out custodial workers at your facility. Give them a big "TY" for all that they do to keep the facility sparkling and running like a top.

If you are a custodial worker, we wish you a very happy National Custodial Workers Day!

Today is Confucius Day

When : Always September 29th

Confucius Day honors one of the world's greatest philosophers.

Born in China on October 18, 551 B.C., Confucius is one of the earliest, and perhaps the the first great philosopher. He was also a teacher, a scholar, and a politician. He gave the world many teachings, and gave the world 499 famous sayings.

Celebrate Confucius Day by learning more about this ancient philosopher, and read some of his teachings and sayings.

Note: Over the years, many comical and humorous sayings have been created and referenced as sayings of Confucius, usually titled "Confucius Says". As a rule of thumb, if the saying is humorous, chances are it is not a true saying by this great scholar.

Today is Business Women's Day

When : September 22

Business Women's Day recognizes the value and contribution of women in the business world.

The roots of this special day go back to the late 1940s. While men were off fighting World War II, women filled the void in the workforce. The returning soldiers found the women eager to have their men return. But, many women were not anxious to return to traditional roles in the home. Since this time, women's role and contributions in the workforce have grown and evolved.

Ladies, have a Happy Business Women's Day!

Origin of Business Women's Day:
Hilary A. Bufton Jr. and three Kansas City business women founded the American Business Women's Association(ABWA) on September 22, 1949. The first Business Women's Day was celebrated in 1982.

In 1983, a joint Congressional resolution was passed, and signed by President Ronald Reagan proclaiming September 22 as Business Women's Day. President Ronald Reagan also issued Proclamation 5532 on American Business Women's Day, in 1986.
