PSA! PLEASE DON’T THROW ROCKS AT FIRE ENGINES!

Today, we had a gentleman pick up a rock and throw it at a fire engine, on a busy road, on the way to a call!

When we are driving with lights and sirens, we are making strategic moves around traffic that are risky and requires our full attention of all 3 people inside the engine.

YFD RESPONDS TO MORE THAN A DOZEN FIRES!

Let’s talk about what YFD does VERY WELL! When it comes to fighting fire, one of our main goals is to contain the fire and gain control. As fireworks lit many trees on fire, it’s easy to just picture a single tree on fire. Fire can easily jump from tree to tree to a house.

When firefighters show up on scene, we are very particular in where we park our apparatus and where we put our hose lines to contain fires. This goes the same for house fires.

For example, the picture above is the fire we had on July 3rd. You can see how the fire started with both buildings which then caught part of the hillside and trees on fire. YFD strategically attacked the fire and we were able to contain the fire to just the 2 buildings before it lit the next building on fire. We also stopped the fires on the hillside and trees before it could move to the homes above it.

So please remember when people talk about the money lost during fires due to damages, it doesn’t show the full picture. There’s a lot of potential money saved when we contain fires to the original location.

ALERT! YFD HAS ONLY 1 BACK UP ENGINE AND 1 BACK UP TRUCK FOR CALLBACK CREWS THIS WEEKEND!

We ask everyone to be very careful this weekend… July 4th is the busiest week for structure fires and this past week, we have responded to a structure fire almost every day and some days with multiple structure fires! (This isn’t even counting brush fires)

We have called back for off-duty crews 3 times this last week alone to assist either at the fire or EMS calls in the city. We are limited to 1 engine and 1 truck (a full fleet, there would be 4 back-up engines and a truck)… the truck requires special training to be able to drive it. So there are only a limited amount of personnel who have the ability to drive it if they’re available..

Even if we’re approved for 2 fire engines, we will go through this fire season AND NEXT FIRE SEASON with this current fleet. Our awesome mechanics are drowning trying to keep these rigs afloat. YFD responds to well over 10,000 calls per year and is one of the highest per capita for structure fires in the state of Washington… these old rigs cannot handle the workload of what this city requires.

5 fires in the past day..

YAKIMA -- Another day with triple digit temperatures, but if you think that's rough try putting out a fire during this heat wave. Yakima fire fighters have responded to at least five different fires in the last day. They're battling more than just those flames, they're dealing with heat exhaustion.....

The hits keep on coming. Today, while crews were battling multiple structure fires and brush fires which left the city depleted of resources, Engine 95 went out of service with a mechanical issue. This comes just two days after a driver of Engine 95 smelled what seemed to be an electrical fire of some sort, and our awesome mechanics were able to quickly find the short and get the rig back into service within the day. A short that was said to have potentially had catastrophic results if it wasn’t found as quickly as it was.

Today is a prime example of why we need reliable rigs. With multiple fires going on, we needed to call back 2 off duty crews to come in and staff engines to respond to incidents around the city. With most of our frontline engines being out of service, and running on reserve apparatus, we barely have any rigs for these call back crews to respond on.

Unfortunately, this is only the beginning of our busiest season. Days like today are bound to become the normal for us for the rest of the summer. We want to send a huge thank you to all of our neighbor departments for coming to help, some as far as Kittitas.

Thank you for your continued support!

Did you know that YFD, on average, responds to a confirmed structure fire every 3 days?

This doesn’t include the 10,000+ annual calls we respond to (hazmat, accidents, EMS, tech rescue, etc.). We typically have many people taking photos and/or videos during our major events and we would love to have that content!

If you make a post, please use the hashtag and you just might get reposted! Thank you for your continued support!
