Little Blessings Birth Services

Little Blessings Birth Services Empowering families through compassionate holistic midwifery care. The term doula is a fairly new term in the US birthing community. Sounds pretty simple, right?

However, the practice of having a doula has been around for quite some time, especially in other countries. Doula simply means a woman who serves. Well, it pretty much is. However, when a woman who has the experience of birth, or the training to help assist, comes alongside a laboring mother beautiful things happen. According to the DONA website:

"Numerous clinical studies have found that a doula’s presence at birth

tends to result in shorter labors with fewer complications
reduces negative feelings about one’s childbirth experience
reduces the need for pitocin (a labor-inducing drug), forceps or vacuum extraction and cesareans
reduces the mother’s request for pain medication and/or epidurals

Research shows parents who receive support can:

Feel more secure and cared for
Are more successful in adapting to new family dynamics
Have greater success with breastfeeding
Have greater self-confidence
Have less postpartum depression
Have lower incidence of abuse"

If you're interested in learning more about how a doula can help you and your family better your birth experience, I'd love to talk with you. Feel free to private message me on Facebook, give me a call, or send me an email. I'd love to answer your questions and possible serve you during your birth. Janelle

When the majesty of the sunrise demands you pause and snap a picture of her beauty… 🥰 Views like this… just the icing on the cake to the wonder that is my job. Y’all, I’m blessed.

What a great finding!

What a great finding!

An incredible new study found that pregnant women who consume just 6 dates a day in the 4 weeks leading up to their due date were 74% more dilated upon their arrival to the hospital, had a 77% shorter first stage of labor and a 42% lower rate of caesarean sections.

Eating dates in the late stages of pregnancy lead to higher cervical dilation upon hospital admission because the fruit contains nutrients that influence oxytocin receptors, preparing the cervix and uterus for labor by increasing muscle response to oxytocin and other labor-supporting hormones. Dates are a rich source of energy from natural sugars and fats and also contain prostaglandins, which contribute to cervical ripening. Additionally, they provide serotonin, calcium, and tannins, which contribute to powerful uterine contractions.

Eating dates in the late stages of pregnancy shortens the first stage of labor due to their ability to stimulate the production of prostaglandins, which promote cervical ripening (softening and thinning of the cervix) and increase uterine contractions. Dates also contain tannins, which have a similar effect, and provide a natural sugar source for energy during labor. Some studies even suggest that dates can increase uterine sensitivity to oxytocin, leading to more effective contractions and a quicker and smoother labor process.

These actions are also the exact reason why women who eat dates in the late stages of pregnancy and far less likely to need a c-section!

The most common recommendation is for women to begin eating 6 dates a day starting in their 37th week of pregnancy.

“We can plan and work towards the dream birth, hoping our plans come to fruition - and often times they do. However, we realistically only get half the say. Baby gets the other half.”

Something I tell my clients frequently.
Something I believe deeply.
Something I experienced firsthand.

Our sweet Kai is three weeks old today.

Three weeks ago I was supposed to be filling up a birth tub on my back patio. Surrounded by my beautiful plants and serenaded by soft twinkling lights. Welcoming my precious boy earthside into his dad’s arms peacefully, surrounded by soft and quiet love.

Early labor started and started to stall. A listen to baby sunk my heart to my stomach and caused me to hold my breath - a heart arrhythmia. My world slowed down for the next bit as a new reality began to form.

Emergent transfer
Induction
Potential c-section if he didn’t tolerate labor

Out of five labors, this was the most excruciating I have ever experienced. His position was off most of the time. The pitocin hard. But there was so much beauty in the birth too.

My partner loved and supported.
My midwife saved space.
My birth team at the hospital helped ease my concerns and gave me as much freedom as they could in the situation.

He was welcomed in roaring chaos - fitting for the little warrior he is. My best laid out plans were set aside for the next best thing for him.

At times my heart still aches some for the birth I had planned for, and that’s okay. But when it comes to birth, we really only get half the say. It’s why having a well prepared and supportive birth team is so important.

This was his story too.
I was definitely just along for the ride. And quite the ride it was.

I’m thankful for those who surrounded me with love while I held on for what felt like dear life at times.

Sometimes our stories don’t end up the way we envisioned, but there is still beauty and empowerment in the story.

Welcome, Kai. We’re so thankful you’re here for us to love up on in person now. 🥰 And very blessed that your heart arrhythmia went away within the first six hours you joined us.

Due to getting ready to welcome another little blessing of my own, Little Blessings will likely be slow to respond to calls and emails the month of August. 🥰

Yes, I am planning on continuing to serve families after enjoying a break to soak up newborn cuddles and am accepting new clients with due dates in 2025. Thank you for your patience with scheduling consults and initial appointments in the near future for a brief time. 💜

After a month of play, this midwife is working on getting back into the swing of things… omegas, trace minerals, collagen, super greens, and all the goodies to give my body the support it needs. And of course a blueberry bagel as a treat for being good 😆

Anyone else working on getting back on track?
