🎙️ Resident Spotlight!

On November 5th, Dr. Velarde — on his day off, after working a night shift! — joined Radio Cadena KDNA to share valuable education about diabetes in honor of World Diabetes Day.

Alongside Lily Gonzalez, he discussed lifestyle changes, the importance of working closely with providers, and cleared up common misconceptions — like the idea that starting insulin means it’s “the end of the line.” He also explained how HbA1C testing helps track diabetes management.

Through this hour-long segment, Dr. Velarde reached hundreds of Spanish-speaking listeners locally and internationally — empowering our Latino community with knowledge and encouragement. 💙

We’re incredibly proud of his passion for patient education and his ongoing dedication to serving our community beyond the clinic walls.

Congratulations to Dr. Velarde, Third Year Resident, for completing the Avant STAMP 4P Spanish Medical Exam and earning an outstanding 8.5 out of 9 average score across reading, writing, listening, and speaking!

“I’m passionate about providing care to our monolingual Spanish-speaking community. In order to ensure I was providing excellent care, I needed to test my skills, verify my weaknesses, and strengthen them as needed,” Dr. Velarde shared. “Although I was intimidated at first, I knew completing it would help me achieve a stronger connection with my patients. Totally worth it!”

We’re proud of Dr. Velarde’s commitment to growth and to creating stronger connections with every patient he serves.

Wrapping up our Residency Summer Recap Series - we love our community!

Our Ellensburg residents were proud to join Hoops for Hearts, standing alongside families impacted by congenital heart disease (CHD). Beyond the basketball games, it was a day filled with connection, support, and hope for CHD warriors and their families.

Part two of our Residency Summer Recap Series takes us to Kansas City! 🩺

Our residency team had the privilege of attending the AAFP FUTURE Conference in Kansas City - a national gathering shaping the future of family medicine through innovation, leadership, and connection.

This year, one of our own, Dr. Florence Akintan, was awarded a Family Medicine Leads Scholarship! This scholarship supports residents and medical students who are committed to family medicine by helping cover the costs of attending FUTURE. Out of hundreds of applicants, only 250 residents and medical students were selected in 2025 — and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate Dr. Akintan as one of them. 👏✨

Congratulations to Dr. Akintan and to our residency team for representing CHCW on the national stage!
