Researchers discovered that diseased kidneys release tiny particles called extracellular vesicles into the bloodstream that carry harmful genetic material. These particles can directly damage the heart, offering a biological explanation for the high rate of heart failure in people with chronic kidney disease — beyond shared risk factors like high blood pressure or diabetes.

In lab studies, reducing these toxic particles improved heart function even when kidney disease was still present, suggesting new paths for earlier diagnosis and future treatments.
